Michael's Story

Life Barb and I just hit the "married for 20 years" milestone a couple months ago (March 2). A wonderful woman with whom I've raised 3 kids -- Jessica (21), Ryan (19), and Tiffany (16). I've been running an advertising business for the last 10 years, most of the time doing it from home, though I moved into an office in the last year. Attended our 30th reunion a couple summers ago. Terrific fun to see those who were there, especially some of the old St. John's graduates. Will hit 50 years old this summer. An odd time of life in ways -- we're old enough to look back and remember so much ... and we can also now actually see being 60, 65, and beyond. Didn't 75 seem like an impossibility? And now, at almost 50, it's like, "75 ... yes, I can see being there." Both Barb and I have been putting more emphasis on simply staying healthy: exercise, supplements, the right food, and all that. We've found some great sites and alternative sources of information on health. Still and all, I enjoy a few cigarettes a day. Had my years of enjoying drinks, but just don't seem to have a beer or a drink but every few weeks at best. The best part of life? Well, kids are pretty cool, aren't they? Having kids doesn't just re-define love for you. It changes who you are. You know love in a way that I think is impossible to know without kids. Being married to Barbara is very cool, too. 20 years and not just still going, but stronger than ever. Lots of ups and downs. Lots of struggles and fights and working hard to figure it out. But it's all worth it. She's the woman that I fully anticipate hitti...Expand for more
ng that 75-year old mark with -- God willing, of course. No longer attending Catholic church. Joined a neat non-denominational church back in the mid-80's called Washington Cathedral. Very cool church on the Eastside. But began at a Lutheran church up in Richmond beach back in '99, I think. I didn't realize how similar the Lutherans and Catholics are, at least as far as the service goes. Kissing cousins. Live out in the Shoreline area, where we've been since '88. As John Denver said in "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" ... "It's been a good life, all in all." More than that, it's been a wonderful life. So many things to be thankful for. I've had to re-learn many of life's lessons through the years, and one that I cherish most is simply to give thanks to God for all that we have. We are so fortunate, aren't we? Gratitude, first and foremost, opens the doors for ever more of God's blessings. And having gone to Blanchet is one of those blessings I remain thankful for. I'm not one who remembers a great number of details and stories, and I'm sure many of my fellow grads remember much more than I do. But I've always looked at those years as special -- the teachers, my classmates, just being in that atmosphere. We were lucky, weren't we? My folks raised 7 kids, and put all of 'em through Blanchet. Who could know how important that would be? Somehow, they did. And my folks -- still alive and doing well. Well, that's about it for now. If you're an old classmate or friend from those times, feel free to email me at mikelrb at the aol.com domain. We're a lucky bunch, aren't we? Mike
