Michael's Story

Life After graduation I was able to join the Alexandria Police which is what I wanted. I stayed there ten years. In 1976 I resigned and my (first) wife, two sons and I moved to Westmoreland County. On July 8th, 1981, I got back into police work , in Hampton, Va. I was the first SRO in Hampton and began that during my last 7 years. I was the School Resource Officer at Phoebus High School. Those last 7 years as an SRO were beyond compare. The kids made me work hard but I have found that I did make a difference for a few of them. I married my now ex- 2nd wife, Diane, in 1988 and we had our daughter, Margaret. She graduated high school June 2009, just 3 months after her sixteenth birthday. The wife decided she wanted to be single again, and after 19 years 11 months and ten days she was. Daughter delivered a boy on 11Dec'13. For a hobby I was "drafted" into Company C of the Confederate States Marine Corps in 1995. It is a Civil War reenactment unit which was a lot of fun (great stress reliever). Our entire family was involved and loved it. In the late 1990's we began doing the US Marine Corps during the Civil War. For Christmas, 2003, Santa finally brought me the present I had wanted. It only took 33 years. Got an '04 Electra Glide Classic. (he left the bill also.) After 86,000 miles I traded it in May, '13, for a new Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager. On 1 Aug, 2004, I retired after a total of 33 years as a cop. During that time I lost 9 friends in the line of duty. One, Conrad Birney, my mentor, was shot during a bank robbery, four others were gunned down, three died in traffic crashes and one, Kenny Wallace, my friend, was shot in the head when he was ambushed by three pieces of puke. They actually wanted to kill another officer but Kenny happened to be there so they used him for practice. They were apprehended without incident. In April, 2006, I went to work for the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Just enough to get my own place. Well...it is a small house in Henrico County, about 25 minutes from work. Got tired of that 'stuff' and now, since 12/12 they pay me to stay home. Yup, retired again. Joined the Blue Knights LEMC in '03 Went on a motorcycle trip to the Blue Knights International Convention, Milwaukee, Wi.(July'07) It was a great two weeks and 2,317.5 miles. Went to Tyler, Texas summer '12. With all the touring it was about 3800 miles. Went to Hot Springs, Arkansas July 2013, and took the long way home, total 3,000 miles. In 2015, heading out on the motor to Reno, Nevada with a few side stops. Umm, 2700 direct route each way. Gonna take it easy and take five days going out, a week there and at least five days getting back. Have to stop ...Expand for more
in and see my best friend from Hammond, Jimmy Caughorn in Knoxville. July, 2015, took a short motorcycle trip. Left Richmond and ended in Reno, NV. On the way back I stopped in Knoxville to visit with my oldest friend, Jimmy Caughorn. Went to Reno by way of Denver then out old US 50 in Nevada, That road is called "The Loneliest Highway" and they are right. Stopped at one point to stretch and was there about 40 minutes on the side of the road and NOBODY drove by in either direction. Not even a bird went by. Beautiful country except f ok r the short sand storm. Shortly after I stopped I did hear what sounded like a baby rattle coming from the bushes in the desert behind me. Wasn't a baby rattle. Well, maybe a baby rattler!! I did not bother him and he did not bother me. Total trip was right at 7,000 miles. Needless to say, i took the long way home. Can;t wait till the next long trip. July 2017, motorcycle trip to Milwaukee again. Good time and good friends. July 2018, going to our International Convention at Stone Mountain, Ga. On the way home think I will go see another good friend, Wendell Garrett in Florida. We were with APD.....oh so many years ago. Currently work part time for the Henrico County Sheriff's Office. Keeps me active and is fun. Plus, they help pay for my motorcycle trips. Police work has taken a toll on my person. Both knees replaced and back is out between T3 and S3. Doc said bear it as long as possible before surgery as it may not end as we/I hope. At least she is honest. I like that part. I was going to go to Florida last year to see Jimmy Caughorn but Ann Lafko sent me a note in March, 2020, that Jimmy passed away. He was a good guy and good friend. I'll be seeing you in the future my friend, but forgive me if it's not for many years. Hope all my classmates are in good health. All hail the Blue and White! Military I joined the 171st. M.P. Bn., DCARNG, out of high school in 1965. I was with Company "B" then "C", in the motor pool, until I got out in 1971. I can still recall the black smoke rising over the Capitol building as I hurried along I-495 and over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge from the Police Academy to the Armory for the riots in 1968. We also made history by being billeted in THE US CAPITOL a couple nights because of threats to the building. Second time in U.S. history. The first being during the War between the States. SSgt. Boone.....we guessed wrong about those times didn't we. I have always wondered how Johnny Combs is or where he is? Between the two of us, we got things done in the motor pool. Got discharged in '71. Went by the Armory a couple years ago and was told the unit was disbanded and merged into other units but no one could say which ones or where.
