Michael's Story
22 years ago, I got booted into real life. I've been resenting it ever since.
Alright, not really.
I worked odd jobs for extra cash, and began performing around SoCal with my brother Joe ('85) and Mike Murphy ('85); we formed the band Letters Home, writing all our stuff and playing a LOT. Maybe some of you who stayed in the area witnessed some of our unique shows, or heard us on your college radio stations during the early '90's.
That part of my life was extraordinarily fun and gratifying.
In 1994, I moved to southwest MO where I still reside with my wife of 14 years. I have been a working musician here, recording vocals, guitar, piano and/or harmonica for artists like Jim Stafford, Pam Tillis, John Davidson, the Osmonds, John Schneider, and many others.
For the last 7 years, however, I have been working with Andy Williams when he goes on tour, and occasionally on his stage here in Branson. We've toured Singapore, Tokyo, Nagoy...Expand for more
a, Liverpool, Bangkok, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff, London, Manchester, Sheffield, and many other venues over the years. By far the best has been performing at the Royal Albert Hall; for the first few minutes, it's just me, with a guitar and a mic, singing and playing all by myself, in front of some 7,000 Londoners... until Andy comes out and then we sing a medley of bossa nova tunes.
I got to do this in 2005 and AGAIN in 2007. And got PAID to do something I'd have gladly paid to do. How does it get better than that?
I currently perform 6 nights a week at Andy's bar and grill next to his theatre, and when he tours, I tend to go with him. I also continually work as a session musician, and for various shows in town.
It keeps me busy enough.
Our family consists of yours truly, my wife, her three children from previous marriage, and our 3 year old granddaughter Kiara. (Seriously, 40 years old with a 3 year old grandbaby? Awesome!)
