Michael's Story
School
All 12 years of my hometown education were spent in the public schools of Harrison, Arkansas. (I did not attend kindergarten.) I completed the first three grades at Eagle Heights Elementary, then attended 4th through 6th grades at Woodland Heights. Entering the 7th grade at Harrison Junior High in 1967, I moved on to Harrison High School in 1970.
I played trumpet in Junior High and High School bands. In 1972 I was a local and district science fair winner in my category. I was active in Drama Club in High School. I was vice president of Spanish Club in my senior year. I won 3rd place in the state Voice of Democracy oratorical contest. I was parliamentarian in Science Club and secretary in Junior Academy of Science.
I graduated in May 1973.
College

urs credit from CLEP tests, entering college as a sophomore. I was a member of Chi Sigma Alpha social club. I was vice president of Science Club in my junior year. I was inducted into Alpha Chi honor society (as a lifetime member). At Harding I met my wife and we were married in 1975. We graduated in 1976. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry.
I attended the University of Arkansas medical school in Little Rock from 1976 to 1980, earning a Doctorate in Medicine (M.D.).
Military
I was commissioned an Ensign with the Medical Corp of the U.S. Navy in 1976. I attended Officer Indoctrination School in Newport, Rhode Island, in July-August 1977.
From 1983 to 1986 I was stationed at U.S. Naval Hospital, Naples, Italy. I was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1984.
In 1986 I was transferred to U.S. Naval Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, from which I was honorably discharged in 1987.
