Michael's Story
Mercy! A bio in 20 or so words? Lots of University courses -a few Masters degrees. (I did become a better student as I progressed) in Math (taught for 40 years); in Supervision of Instruction (mentored lots of student teachers, and was department chairs and state offices in math educ. Also helped edit, sell, and write math textbooks for Scott Foresman; in Exercise Physiology (tested fitness levels and prescribed proper exercises); in Computer Science (worked for IBM Corp, and a much smaller Sauer Computer Systems; twenty years of my teaching were in State colleges and universities in Georgia; retired but tutored college children of migrant workers to try to get them to stay in college and out of the fields. Still tutor older children of friends or the friends themselves if they're back in school. Busy in all sorts of athletic activities but I did coach baseball in Chicago and St. Louis. (died in 2000 from lung cancer), married just over 6 years to Marion (for as long as she is able to put up with me I guess). Life was made much easier by my background in Hoopeston - lots of Germans on the paperroute and prisoners of war right across the street, African-Americans in my neighborhood, Hispanics across the street, my family doctor (and his family were Jewish). Later, I've mixed it up in a lot of different cultures! As I said, "What fun!" Lots of interests: music interests span country, jazz, Broadway and opera; Exercise activities forever; Reading (scientific and religious and some novels); Oil painting - mostly portraits; Gardening - things good to eat and things good to look at. Etc ad nauseum. Thanks to all who knew me as a youngster and as you were part of the community, help bring me along. I wouldn't trade you for anything. Mike
Who was/is my hero?
My dad. I never saw anything he couldn't do. A man who always tried and loved.
