Michael's Story

I was born in Logan, Utah while my dad was attending USU. He was from Logan and my mom from Brigham City. After he graduated we moved to Lava Hot Springs, ID for one year then back to USU where dad worked on his MA in community recreation. We then moved to Fort Brag, CA where he coached and taught high school. I went K thru 2nd in Fort Brag. For the 3rd grade we moved to Auburn, CA where he coached at Sierra Jr. College. 4th- 6th (beginning in 1955) was in Vallejo, CA at Cooper Elementary School. I attended Vallejo Jr. High School (California) beginning in the Fall of 1958 through the Spring of 1960. My father got a football job coaching in Brigham City, Utah at Box Elder High School beginning in the Fall of 1960--I was a freshman at Box Elder Jr. High. After graduating from Box Elder High School in 1964, I attended Utah State University where I played freshman football as a quarterback and joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and went active in the Spring of 1965. I served a LDS mission to the West German Mission headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. I was released on 31 December 1967 and re-entered USU in January 1968. I married Kitty Rhodes on 18 September 1968 and continued my studies at USU. With a draft lottery number of 21 on 1 Dec 1969 and 2 1/2 weeks to go to complete my student teaching and graduate from USU I decided to pursue a life long dream and join the Air Force to become a pilot. Our first son, James Michael Dunn was born in Logan on 13 January 1970. I began officer's training school in San Antonio, TX in July 1970 and after receiving my commission in October I started undergraduate pilot training at Reese AFB by Lubbock, TX in November. After completing pilot training, I remained at Reese AFB as a T-38 instructor pilot and flight test pilot in the T-37 and T-38. Our second son, David Leslie Dunn was born in Lubbock on 4 September 1972. I left Reese in 1975 for Beale AFB, CA where I flew the T-39 (Saberliner) and was the Equal Opportunity and Treatment Officer and later the Chief, Social Actions. Our daughter Alexis Kathleen Dunn was born 3 October 1975. I completed my MA in Counseling and Guidance in 1976 from the University of Northern Colorado. I was selected to fly the F-4, Phantom II in 1978 and attended Fighter Lead-In Training at Holloman AFB, NM (Alamagordo) and from there to F-4 training at McDill AFB, FL near Tampa . In January 1979 I reported for duty at Spangdahlem AB, Germany where I flew the F-4C, F-4 Weasel C, F-4E, F-4 ARN101E, and F-4G. Squadrons I was assigned to were the 81st (Wild Weasels) and 480th (War Hawks) was also the bishop of the Bitburg Servicemen's Ward. In January 1982 I left Spangdahlem AB for Homestead AFB, Florida (Miami) where I was an instructor/Flight Commander in the F-4D (309th Wild Ducks). In the summer of 1984 we left Homestead AFB for a NATO assignment at HQ AFCENT in Brunssum, Netherlands where I worked on the Special Weapons Staff until...Expand for more
1986. I was also the part time Executive Officer for our general and his racket ball partner. I was selected to Fly the F-16 and had a class date for training and follow on assignment to Torrejon AB in Madrid, Spain and was on the list for squadron commander. Our David was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease and we received an emergency transfer to Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas where the Air Force's medical center (Wilford Hall) is located. (Had to give up an F-16 assignment to Torrejon AB, Spain.) At Lackland I was the operations officer for the Air Force Basic Military Training School until David completed his chemo and radiation therapies. I was selected for squadron command and assigned as the 71st STURON Commander at Vance AFB in Enid, Oklahoma. A year later I was selected to start up and command the 5th Flying Training Squadron (Spittin Kittens) also at Vance. I left Vance in July 1990 for the Air Force Air War College where I studied National Security Management and graduated in 1991. Air War College is the military PhD program. From July 1991-August 1992 I was stationed at HQ 6ATAF in Izmir, Turkey for my second NATO assignment as the Assistant Chief of Staff, Exercise Division. I left my family in Providence, UT while I went on this assignment alone. This was just after the first Gulf War and it was not safe in Turkey as many US interests were attacked--shot or bombed. After my promotion to colonel in August 1992, I was assigned as CINCUSAFEs liaison to the US Ambassador to Germany and the German Federal Government at the US Embassy in Bonn, Germany in August 1992 to July 1994. One program I worked on was the partial return of Rhein Main AB to the Germans. I sat second chair on the negotiating table and secured $85M in construction projects at Ramstein AB in exchange for the land at Rhein Main. From Bonn, I was assigned as the Deputy Community Commander of the Kaiserslautern Military Community also in Germany. While serving in Kaiserslautern, I was also the bishop of the Kaiserslautern Servicemen's Ward until December 1995. My final assignment was to HQ PACAF at Hickam AFB, Hawaii near Honolulu where I was the director of staff (chief of staff). We remained there until I retired in October 1997 and moved back to Utah. We sold our home in Providence and purchased a home being built in Brigham City, Utah--a short walk to the golf course club house. I worked for Western States Mortgage Company selling home mortgages, was a supervisor for the 2000 census, site manager for CDI engineering services company and District Director for Congressman Jim Hansen. After Jim retired I worked several years for White Dot Solutions as their security officer and program manager for several equipment moving contracts at Hill AFB until I retired in January 2011. 6 August 2005 my son David died from Renal cancer. I am currently the Owner/President of a Consulting/Contracting firm I named Check 6, LLC.

Hate to post this one, BUT...……...he did promise he was going to follow in McCain's footsteps.
Wouldn't it be something if REAL HEROES were recognized for their contributions.
