Michael's Story
Life
Michael R. Gates recently graduated (2008) from Boise State University with a BA in Art History. He is now considering grad school.
Michael was born and raised in Kansas City, KS, where he attended grade school in the Turner School district and eventually earned an Associates of Arts Degree in Fine Art from KCK Community College in 1986.
Michael moved his family from Kansas to Baltimore, MD, in 1989 when he accepted a position as a PC technician with a firm there. In 1996, he moved westward to Boise, ID, and there he remains.
A lifelong fan of horror and science fiction, Michael enjoys reading, watching films, reading and writing about art and film, and working with computers.

y College in 1986, Michael did a short stint as sign artist in Shawnee, KS, then spent about three years as a freelance artist, with his forte being airbrush illustration. During this period, Michael did work for companies such as KCFX-FM 101 (The Fox), Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Adventist Health Systems, K-Mart, and ArtWorld.
Tired of putting in the long days required by freelancing, Michael used his experience with personal computers--experience gained primarily through amateur programming and creating CGI in his freelance work--to secure a position as a PC tech with a firm near Baltimore, MD.
Seven years later, Michael's wife, Wendy--a professional computer programmer--accepted a position with a company near Boise, ID, and he followed her to this city on the other side of the USA. In Idaho, Michael combined his computer and art skills and set up shop as a Web Page designer and developer, but he saw the handwriting on the wall when the bottom fell out of the "dot-com" industry circa 2001 and soon after accepted a job in the Finance department of a publishing company in Nampa, ID.
Since then, Michael has worked as an artist and assistant in a tattoo shop, as well as continuing with freelance art and computer work. In 2006, he decided to return to school to finish his BA (and more).
