Michael's Story
Military
I started as a Infantry Soldier in Cornwallis in Jan 79, and then to Battle School at CFB Wainwright Alberta, in Apr 79, a 17 week Combat Arms course.
My 1st posting was to CFB Winnipeg, MB with the 2nd Battalion Princess PatriciaÂs Canadian Light Infantry in Aug 79.
Fortunately they require augmenteeÂs in the infantry to assist with support and logistics and I jumped at the chance when a cooks helper position opened up. After 3 years of on the job training (OJT) I was finally permitted to change occupations and initial TQ3 was waived. During
During this period I was fortunate to be part of CanadaÂs Peace Keeping mission in Cyprus for a 6 month tour from Sep 82 Â Apr 83.
In January of 84 I was posted to CFB Wainwright AB and IC of one shift of the Junior Ranks Kitchen In Aug of 84 I was promoted to Master Corporal and was employed as IC of rations for the same kitchen.
In 87 I was employed as IC of the Warrant Offices and Sergeants Mess for a year. In April of 89 I was granted the Kitchen Manager (IC Kitchen) position of the VVIP Officers Mess for CanadaÂs largest military exercise of over 10,000 troops, Rendezvous (RV) 89.
And in full circle, from running a shift to running the kitchen, in Jan of Â90 I was IC of the Junior Ranks Kitchen. In June of 90 I was promoted to Sergeant and Posted to Edmonton, home of then (Namao) 14 Wing, CanadaÂs Hercules 435, Helicopter and a Twin Otter Search & Rescue Squadrons.
My 1st position there for a year was IC of the In Flight Feeding Kitchen, which supported meals for all flights. In the next year I was IC of the Combined Mess Kitchen. The following year was the Base Food Services Administration Cell, which entailed all operations for all 5 satellite kitchens. The next year I was IC of the Officers Mess Kitchen and the final year I was IC of CanadaÂs elite Airborne Kitchen.
In 95 I was posted to Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Masset, BC on the northern tip of the Queen Charlo...Expand for more
tte Islands were I held the position of Senior Foodservice Manager of the Station. Unfortunately this was at a time of CanadaÂs military down sizing, and we closed the Station in July of Â96. Although, while there I was fortunate to be part of the pilot program for integrating the CFM (Certified Foodservice Manager) qualification from the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservice Association for military chefs.
From there, I took an all new path. I was promoted to Warrant Officer and posted to Victoria, (Esquimalt) BC, home of CanadaÂs Navy of the West, as Chief Cook of HMCS Ottawa. After moving to Victoria, I was off to Halifax for 6 months getting her sea ready. We Commission her in Sep of 96 and sailed through the Panama Canal.
The next few years were a good learning curve, adjusting and training for the all the Navy ways. Being the newest and most recent Frigate, HMCS Ottawa was in line to provide others with a long overdue rest. We prepared (Battle Group Work ups) with the US Navy, and their aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in preparation for a 6 month Peace Keeping tour in the Persian (Arabian Sea) Gulf from July to December of Â98. Foreign ports included; Hong Kong China, Malaysia, Phuket Thailand, Muskat Oman, Kuwait City Kuwait, Dubai UAE, Melbourne & Sidney Australia, and Pearl Harbor Hawaii.
During my 3 year stint as Chief Cook with the Navy, I had an amazing team of junior chefs, and we were awarded Best Food and Service, both coasts by Sea Training 2 years running, and won an international military culinary competition in Portland Oregon at the Portland Rose Festival in 97.
In 1999 I was offered a promotion to MWO and a posting to CFB Edmonton, which has converted to CanadaÂs largest Army base and units in the West. As the girls were pretty well settled in school at this point, we didnÂt want to move them again. Not to mention we love the Island. So, with 21 years of service, at 38 years old, I retired with a full pension.
