Michael's Story

After being a member of classmates for over a decade, I have decided to post on my profile for anyone that is curious to know how I am and where I have been these past 50+ years. I figure that as I am approaching 72 years of age, the opportunity to hear from past friends at LMHS is starting to decrease more rapidly and I also wanted to let everyone know that I am alive and doing well, all things considered. So after graduating from LMHS, I continued my education at Colorado State University where I received a BS in Microbiology from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1975 at the age of 21. During my time at CSU I worked as a student cook one year and as a research assistant my last year. From there I returned back to Levittown (I really wanted to stay in Colorado, but the job opportunities weren't there at the time) and obtained employment at the Pall Corporation in Glen Cove as a laboratory scientist. One of my favorite memories of that time was going to the nearby beach for lunch with my colleagues and seeing the Long Ships sailing in the LI Sound as it was the US Bicentennial. I was promoted to 2nd shift manager of the lab and manufacturing after about 9 months. I was drawn away from LI about 4 months later by a job offer at John's Hopkins Hospital in Microbiology. They promised I would be doing research on new biochemical techniques for identifying microorganisms but found myself working exclusively on the bench testing a myriad of patient cultures for pathogens. It was mind numbing work and did not work out for me. So back to LI where I decided to go for an MS in the life sciences (Medical Biology with a focus on Immunology) at LIU. I was fortunate to receive both a scholarship and assistantship (I supported lab operations) from the university, so I had no debt incurred from the degree. With just a couple of courses remaining, I was offered and accepted a position as a chemist (I also was given a microbio option) testing finished drug products at E.R. Squibb and Sons (now known as Bristol Myers Squibb). I started there on 9/11/1978 and held that position for about 6 years during which I completed my MS degree (1982) and started dating the young lady that would ultimately become my wife (9/1/1984 - more on that later). Around 1985 I was promoted to a MS level position in Global Tech Ops where I was responsible for troubleshooting numerous technical problems involving our global manufacturing and testing, Everything from developing/improving test methods to identifying contaminants in drug products. About a year into this I was assigned a project involving a contaminant in a novel non-ionic contrast agent that was expected to be worth tens of millions of dollars. Four groups within the company were assigned the same responsibility: isolate and identify the contaminant (what I isolated was only 6 parts per million or to give another perspective that would be 6 pounds of the contaminant mixed in 1 million pounds of the drug substance). I was the first one to accomplish it and it changed my entire life. The effort saw me, my boss and my bosses boss all promoted, with me taking over my bosses management position (BTW, this was the first time a person without a PhD was at this level in the company. I held this position from early 1987 to April 1993 during which (1989) Squibb merged with Bristol-Myers to form what was briefly the largest Pharma business in the world. I survived 3 "downsizings" over the following 3 years only to leave in 93' for a lab mgmt. position at Sterling Drug in Plainsboro. It was a substantial increase in responsibility (my staff grew from 4 to 8) and pay (my now wife had just given birth to our 3rd son on 12/28/1992 and the pay increase helped tremendously). All was not perfect with the job change, in fact it turned rough very quickly as I found out that the VP (highest level manager in that office) was a raging lunatic and a micromanager who played favorites with the departments under him. And then Kodak (the company that owned Sterling) decided to sell us to the highest bidder less than 18 months later putting all of us in jeopardy of losing our jobs. In fact, when we were ultimately bought by Bayer and SKB, I almost lost my job because I was slated to go to SKB with 10 others and SKB reneged, leaving us in limbo for about a month. Only one person went to SKB, but thankfully the rest of us went to Bayer. But my position was downgraded to Senior Scientist from Group Leader. Thankfully my pay and future raises were not impacted. And about six years later (~2000), having proven myself to upper management, I was promoted to Associate Director where I spent the rest of my career (I was not interested in moving up further as it would have taken me from my family due to frequent international travel requirements) until my ...Expand for more
retirement May 31, 2016 at the age of 62 with a fantastic severance package (I was not forced to retire, but due to another acquisition by Bayer, the option presented itself and I opted in). So that is how thing went for my business life. Now on to a bit of my personal life. I met my wife in a post office in Edison NJ. She and I both lived in Edison, but I actually recognized her from Squibb as she worked on the first floor of the same chemistry building that I was in (she was a chem-tech testing raw materials), but on the 2nd floor (it was a large building with over 100 people working in it). She was leaving the post office as I was entering (to mail my grandmom a birthday card), a few more seconds and we would not have met. Anyway, when I saw her I used that hackneyed old line "Haven't I seen you somewhere before?" But in this case it was true and I suppose she must have recognized me too. We chatted a bit and while we were talking a little girl broke away from her mom and ran towards the exit which was on a very busy road. Darlene, without hesitating ran and stopped her. This impressed me very much. We completed our chat and parted company. The next time I saw her she was with her friends at the company cafeteria having lunch and I asked if I could join them. Over the following weeks we had lunch together frequently as a group and I got to learn more about her and her family and the kind of friends she hung with. I eventually asked her out, but was rejected (her mom was having serious medical issues, I wasn't sure if she was just using it as an excuse). But we continued to have lunch together (I also started completing my MS degree around this time) and several months later I asked again and she said yes. Our 1st date was on February 12, 1981 to see the movie Chariots of Fire and dinner at the Red Lobster. The movie was in the East Brunswick Square Mall (NJ) and when we were leaving (and I am not making this up) they were filming an episode of the Newlywed Game in the middle of the mall (an omen?). Anyway to make a long story short, we dated for 2 years, were engaged for 1 during which we found and contracted to purchase a home (we still live there 41 years later) which I moved into from my apartment in Edison (late May of 1984) while she stayed with her parents and I fixed the place up. The home sits on 2 acres, is heavily wooded in the back where a brook also runs across the property. Behind us is over 600 acres of preserved open space and despite the rural nature of the area (the Delaware and Raritan Canal is just down the road from us) we have easy access to all of the things you find in a large suburb. We continued to work together at Squibb for 3 more years until our first son was born. Darlene resigned her position to be a stay at home mom (we also home-schooled all three of our sons up till college). Our sons were born in 1987 (David, Senior Director of IT at a mid-size security company), 1989 (Matthew, Captain and Check Airman at SkyWest Airlines with over 11,000 hours flying time, mostly in CRJ-900's) and Mark (1992, An RN at an Atlantic Health hospital in NJ). David and his wife have blessed us with 3 grandkids, Oliver, Elise and Norah and they live so close by that we can walk to their home in less than 10 minutes. Our youngest was married in October of 2023 and blessed us with a granddaughter last February. Our pilot son recently rented an apartment near the Detroit airport that is his base of operations. He come home to visit on his longer breaks. Darlene and I have been married for 41 years as of last this September. My mom passed away in 2015 at 82 from a short illness and my dad passed on April 22nd of 2024 at 93. He was buried on the 9th anniversary of my mom's passing. My brothers, both of whom attended LMHS before it closed live in Bay Shore NY (Rich) and a small lakeside town near Roanoke VA (Paul). Both are married and have 2 daughters and 1 son each. Something I left out of my previous profile. As a student at Colorado State University in my first year, my roommate was a professing Christian. Over the months we would discuss the Bible along with several other guys in the dorm. To make a long story short, after many months of discussion on the accuracy and veracity of the Bible, I became convicted that Christ is the Jewish Messiah and have been a Christian ever since. If you care to listen to my testimony, it can be found on a podcast called "Iron Sharpens Iron Radio" hosted by Chris Arnzen. Just search for the April 30th 2020 program. I recommend downloading it as it is 2 hours long with several breaks that you can more easily skip over if you record it. If you do listen, I would love to hear your thoughts on the program. BTW, the "''then" photo is me at 35 from my NJ drivers license. I will try to post a current photo soon.
