Michael's Story
Hello, St. Anthony's & Savanna High School Class of 1979.
To the St. Anthony community:
I assume none of you will remember me, but I attended St. Anthony's from 1975-1976 as part of the freshman class of 1979. I have happy thoughts of my year at St. Anthony's, although time and age (I'm only 48!) have dulled my memories.
I attended St. Anthony's High School only for the 9th grade, and was very upset when my parents moved to Anaheim, CA in 1976 and made me attend the local public high school there for my remaining high school career. I did very well there (being well prepared at St. Anthony's) and graduated the top of my class in 1979. After that I attended UCLA on a full scholarship and graduated with a B.S. degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology in 1983.
I worked at UCLA (and lived in Santa Monica/Los Angeles) from 1983-1997 as a library assistant and then with an M.S. degree as a medical librarian there.
In 1997, I decided to get yet another degree and became a registered nurse. I am currently working as an emergency room nurse/supervisor at Community Hospital of Long Beach (where I was born!), and now am working on an M.S./Ph.D. in nursing and hope to teach some day at the university level.
At 48, I am still single and moved back to Long Beach in 2000 where I own a home in the Belmont ...Expand for more
Heights area. I am raising my 11 year-old nephew who goes to Our Lady of Refuge school.
While making initial inquiries for potential high schools for my nephew, I happened upon the St. Anthony's website and noticed that you are having a 30th high school reunion in August 2009. Just seeing some of the names of potential attendees struck a happy chord in my memory banks. I hope you all have a good time there and enjoy each others' company.
Savanna High School community:
As you can tell from the beginning of my story, I am still living in southern California. I've been hiding out over the last 30 years living my life while quietly marveling over the success (Steve Hillenburg) and notoriety (Scott Yoshizumi) of our fellow graduates.
Although I was pretty quiet & shy during my 3 years at Savanna, I do have fond memories of my tenure there even though I spent much more time at UCLA afterward. I particularly enjoyed the few close friends I met at Savanna-- some of whom have responded to my initial Classmate story. I hope it's not too rude to say I best enjoyed leaving Orange County though.
I hope all you Rebels (is that still the mascot?) enjoy the 30th reunion. Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it-- I'll be in Cancun scuba diving and getting drunk (not necessarily at the same time).
