Michael's Story
After graduating from HCS with the superior class of 1980 I entered the US Coast Guard Academy. I graduated from the Coast Guard Academy with the class of 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. I was commissioned as an officer in the Coast Guard and chose for my first assignment the medium endurance cutter "Steadfast" as a shipboard engineer. After two years and six days (but who was counting) I was transferred to USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. For one year, I shared an apartment with Steve Hyde in Falls Church, VA. Then we moved into a townhouse with another roommate (Kam Agi) and I met my current spouse, Renee. After almost one year I was transferred to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. er for promotion to Lieutenant in December of 1988. Because I was not promoted, I was withdrawn from graduate school and given my choice of three assignments, New Orleans, New York, or DC. Now married, Renee and I chose to return to the DC area and I went back to CG Headquarters. A year later, I was passed over for promotion a second time which resulted in my separation from the CG. I left the CG in April of 1990 never to look back. I worked for a defense contractor in Crystal City, VA for five months before I got hired by Pepco. I started working in the Meter Department in December of 1990 and have been with Pepco since. Renee and I both got our Masters Degrees from Johns Hopkins Univ. and started our family in July of 1998 with the birth of our son Noah. Three and a half years later our family expanded with the birth of our Daughter Hannah in March of 2002.
