Michael's Story
Hello out there, to those of you who still are and to some of you who aren't. I have been remiss in providing any input to this worthy site, an omission I would now like to attempt to rectify. I say attempt because Good Intentions do not count. No matter how hard you try, it is not possible to make amends for missing effort and lost time. So, here goes! :=) I will start by revealing my proudest and most enduring achievement of all:
AFTER 60 YEARS, I AM STILL KNOWN AS ICHABOD CRANE!
Anything else I can tell you is downhill from this point further. :=) I will endeavor to make the remainder of this discourse as palatable as necessary.
After graduation, things became very dicey. For eleven years I hung out at the Wayne State campus, collecting a wife, four children, a BA in Psychology and a carload of graduate school classes in Sociology and Business Administration. I then wisely converted all that education, experience and knowledge into a career in the Information Technology Industry that spanned more than forty years. The most rewarding of this time, twenty-five years, was spent designing and developing large scale software applications for mainframe computer systems. The remainder of the time was wasted making money by recruiting people for this industry. The only really good thing about the Recruiting Era was that it allowed me to become involved in buying and selling antiques, an activity which I continue to pursue.
During this timeframe (Circa 1972-2012), I lived primarily in the Plymouth/Northville areas. Eventually, the children grew up and went their ways, creating six grandchildren in the process. Two wives had exited the scene (1977 & 2007) and peace has enveloped the land ever since.
In 2008, we all remember 2008, my consulting contract at Ford Motor Company ended and there was no available work that interested me. Fortunately, Baron Obama and UCB greased the skids for my glorious glide into Official Retirement in 2010 (I had become "semi-retired" in 1990 - another story.). I downsized and moved into an apartm...Expand for more
ent in Northville.
That Expedition to Never-Never Land lasted about two years. By 2012, I decided to return to my "Semi-Retired" status. Late in 2012 I upsized and began the resurrection of an older home in an historic district in Pontiac. Doing most of the work myself, I don't do things that may kill me, I have reached the point where it is time to turn the job over to the experts for completion.
As a result, a whole new world awaits. Over the last 53 years, my life has been segmented into periods of approximately 15 years duration, alternating between Marriage and Marital Hiatus. I am now half way through my second hiatus. Who knows what may be ahead? All I can tell you is this:
I WOULDN'T MISS IT FOR THE WORLD!
11/7/2018 - ONE ERA ENDS AND ANOTHER BEGINS!
Once again, it is time to move on to other things. I have completed the resurrection of that nice old English Tudor Revival home in Pontiac and, just coincidently, managed to alienate the Pontiac Mayor, Common Council and Planning Commission, along with the Oakland County Water Resources Commission. Sometime before the end of this month, I will begin my invasion of a small, tranquil community up in the North Country along the Lake Huron .shoreline. Fortunately, for both me and them, I am not going there to fix anything. :=) I have finally retired! Well, sort of retired - I will still be selling antiques.
I have done some travelling over the last three plus years in preparation for this new beginning, which will include spending winters in some more hospitable climate. During this time I have visited California and Florida multiple times, North Carolina, Hawaii, and Ecuador. Mexico and/or Central America are on this winter's agenda, along with a stop in San Antonio. A road trip down I-75 is not out of the question! I will check back in next Spring. In the mean time, I'm hoping that anyone with the misfortune of having stumbled upon my babbling is doing well and staying healthy and happy! :=)
PS - If anyone has tried to contact me on Facebook, I am no longer there.
