Michael's Story
Michael is from Vancouver, Washington. Michael's schools include Ft. Vancouver High School, McLoughlin Junior High School, Marshall Elementary School.
After taking the fast path through college (I graduated from the UW in March, 1977), I moved back to Vancouver to help my father manage the family sporting goods business. I did this until the store was closed in 1988. In 1975, I turned my stamp-collecting hobby into a part-time business. This turned into a full-time business after the sporting goods store closed. I operated it as a home based business until it became too large.
I moved my business out of the house and into a storefront at the end of 1995. My wife told me that this needed to happen before the birth of our daughter. I beat that deadline by four months. My business has continued to grow and so has our daughter who just graduated from High School.
Having a hobby based business means that I love my work. I get to travel around the country attending trade shows, seeing the sights, visiting with friends and relatives, and then get to come back to my office and put in my usual 10-12 hour workday.
My family and I have been very fortunate to make several trips to Europe, take ...Expand for more
multiple cruises, attend the Shakespeare festival annually, and visit the 49th and 50th state on many different occasions.
After my father passed away in 1997, I became very interested in Genealogy. Playing detective and tracking down relatives to interview that I didn’t know existed a short time before has been very gratifying. One of my new responsibilities became keeper of the family records that now number in the thousands.
For many years, I have been involved with multiple different non-profits (both religious and not) in helping procure items and to raise funds for their benefit auctions as well as helping with the various events.
Besides the traveling, genealogy and fundraising, I also collect Clark County memorabilia including postal history and postcards. I enjoy attending the performances of magicians as well as studying the history of the illusions and illusionists. Late at night, I enjoy playing a few computer games.
As busy as I am, I do find time to go to the gym a couple of times a week. The gym has a movable rock wall (Tredwall) that I enjoy climbing. In about nine years, As of July 2014, I have racked up as many feet on the wall as climbing Mount Everest 19 times.
