Stacey Michael's Story
Life
20 Years in a nutshell.
( HummÂ
, why write a bio no one is going to read? I guess because it will be cathartic. )
So years, where do I begin? I left Three Rivers just as fast as I could after high school. It turns out that was about eight months later. I had a few loose ends to tie up but I quickly bought a one way ticket to LA with what little money I had. ( Â
in fact if it werenÂt for the kindness of the Nothdruft family I wouldnÂt have had any money in my pocket when I left for LA.)
Around mid February I hopped on a plane and headed west, carrying three suitcases and the $100 the Northdruft family had given me. That was it, no plan, no job, nothing. I knew I was going to stay with a friend from Three Rivers. That arrangement was going to be temporary though because his wife was about 3 months pregnant, so I knew I was going to have a place to stay for about 6 months, that was all.
Â
now itÂs over 20 years later, I never returned to TR, except to visit. I never really belonged there anyway. I was born down south and my earliest memories are being on a bus going somewhere, (anywhere). Settling down in TR was my idea of hell. As I tell people TR was just a fourteen year layover on my way to LA. Not that I did anything great wile in LA but it moved at a pace that better suited me.
I found work as soon as I got to LA. It was in a pet store but the owner had family from MI and he even knew where TR was. He thought it was funny that I had listed detasseling at a job. I got pissed, anyone that lives back there or has done it for a job know how hard it is. He laughed when I got indignant about him questioning detasseling as one of my jobs and ask when I could start. I told him I could start the next Monday; after all I had just got off the plane. He said, Âwhen? Â
I said, ÂÂ
well I could start Friday. He said, Âwhen? Â

I ran to find my friends had just picked me up at the airport and told them I had a job and ask if they would come get me later that day. I never got a chance to visit or just hang out in LA, but considering I had no money to speak of it was just as well.
Six months passed quickly, I met and made friends. One of which had a boyfriend that shared common interest with me, but was renting a three bedroom apartment with only one other roommate. I ask if they needed a third and he said they did. This is how I came to live in one of the roughest neighborhoods in LA. ( Â
if you have ever seen ÂWhite Men canÂt Jump or  Training Day you have see the neighborhood I lived it.)
I live there until the day of the LA riots. I got by in my neighborhood partly because the gangs assumed I was a cop, (what other white person would be crazy enough to live there, if they werenÂt!) So the day they announced the verdict in the Rodney King trial was the day I moved.
I found a better place to live in Southern California, in fact a friend was managing the apartment building so he rented to several mutual friends. It was quite cool; there were about eight different friends and families that lived there. There was never a dull weekend or evening.
I was about 24-25 at this point. Then I got married, MISTAKE! (Â
we should have just stayed friends.) Â
so that took up about the next ten years. I am trying to keep away from saying Âwasted the next ten years. Â
because I am sure something good came out of that time, if only the fact I was able to grow as a person and better determine what I wanted from a mate. I am re-married, as a matter of fact, I married a girl I had dated back when I first go to LA. We had parted, (Â
she swears I dumped herÂ
) years ago. I had a lot thing on my plate not the least of which was helping a friend that been diagnosed with HIV. Â
