Michael's Story
Life
McNally Composite High School Graduate Michael Kaye(class of 83), completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree from The University of Alberta in the summer of 1987. Having had a keen interest in fashion while growing up, Kaye strived to learn all there was to know in the techniques of garment construction and design. Taking out of faculty options in the Clothing and Textile Department at the University of Alberta, Kaye had the great fortune to study under Professor Beate` Ziegert Visiting from Cornell University.
Ziegert recognizing his raw talent insisted that Kaye make application to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Accepted immediately, Kaye attended the Fashion Institute in the fall of 1988 taking the accelerated one-year program where he was on the Dean/s list and held down an internship with the prestigious design firm of Adele Simpson.
After graduating Cum Laude from The Fashion Institute Of Technology in 1989, Kaye began his career as an assistant at Adele Simpson, where he honed his skills in the time honored techniques of couture. Followed by a short stint at Scaasi Dress. He then moved on to Albert Nipon while the company enjoyed its reign as AmericaÂs Dressmaker. His next career step was a 4-year stay as associate designer at Jones New York Dress. After working his way up through the ranks of several garment companies Kaye was offered his own label at Forty Three Apparel, Inc. The Michael Kaye N.Y.C. Label quickly became a fixture in the designer dress departments of Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys, JacobsonÂs, NordstromÂs and Holt Renfrew in Canada.
