Michael's Story

Hi, Michael King here... If you are reading this, you either remember me from the International School Bangkok where I attended the 10th and 11th grades (1970 - 1972); or you knew me from Ft. Campbell HS where I graduated in 1973. After leaving Thailand; Dad moved us all to Ft. Campbell, Kentucky for a year, and I graduated high school there. Dad retired the following year and we all moved to Tampa, Florida. Tampa is my home of record, but Utah is where my heart is. A few years after high school, I enlisted in the Air Force, and stayed in it for 22 years. My first four years were as a Security Policeman. Just before the PATCO strike, the AF was began looking for Air Traffic Controllers. I applied, went through the training, and eventually spent the next 18 years doing that. During my time in the AF, I was stationed at Ramstein AB, Kapaun AS, Carswell AFB, Keesler AFB, Kunsan AB, Prince Sultan AB, and eventually to Hill AFB where I retired from the military. Afterward, I went into Civil Service where I still work as a Contracting Officer. I have been doing it for about 15 years or so. Early on; I was married to a very nice lady, but we were both young and the short lived marriage did not work out. Later though, I met and married my second wife; whom I am still married today. She is a wonderful lady and we have three grown daughters with families of their own. In addition to a wonderful marriage and family, my wife has a Master of Science degree, and she owns a business. I eventually graduated from a university with a Bachelor of Science degree. My Dad still lives in the Tampa Bay area; however my mother passed away in 2005. My sister Jo Anne works for the American Embassy as several overseas locations, and my other sister Terie lives in Kentucky and is an executive manager for a large trucking company which has a branch there. I like spending time with the wife. Other things I enjoy is travel, camping, swimming, going to the gym, riding the motorcycle, and being around friends. When at the gym, which I go to three or four times a week; I mostly enjoy weight lifting, and doing some jogging, and things like that. I have attended one High School reunion so far, and that was the ISB reunion of 2004 in Florida. I had a great time at it. I got to see several buddies...Mark Nickels...Paul Heildleman...Joe Condrill...Donny Drew...and a couple of ...Expand for more
the ladies. In a way, I was very plesently surprised at how well everyone turned out, and thought that everyone looked better than they did in high school in most ways. I can easily say that we had a blast that evening! I would like to attend a FCHS reunion someday. Over the years, I have seen some persons from there; to include Scott Nichols, Tanna Darby, Paul Herrington, Mary Ford, Gunther Feeny, and Dave Hicks. I have also briefly spoken to Ray Stewart, Rob Swallow, and a few others via classmates.com. One time I received a short email from Mary Lacewell that made me smile. I have not been back to Thailand since high school, but my sister went one time. She said that it was looking good and took a lot of photo's of it. She explained to me that the ISB High School that we knew was renamed to something similar to its old name, but that ISB is now in a different location. I got to see photo's of the old high school, which looked good and mostly the same as it did when we lived there. I recognized Rishi Court and Soi 15 where we use to live as well. As for FCHS; my wife and I spent several days visiting Fort Campbell this past year. Clarksville had changed from how I remembered it, and Hwy 41A had grown into a six lane highway. Fort Campbell looked pretty good; however, our old house in Stryker Village looked sort of small now. The high school was no longer a high school, but downgraded to a Junior High now. It was the first time I had been there in 25 years or so, and I enjoyed getting to see it again. As for the ISB crowd, long ago I received some letters from Vicki Paige of Maine; who was my first ever girlfriend. I have seen my second ever girlfriend, Jill Fischer; in the classmates.com. who appears to be doing well. After high school, I ran into a few of the ISB classmates that I use to know. I saw Shirley Campbell several times, Ken Kliever, Steve Apple, Timmy Webb, Mark Nichols, Paul Heidleman, Pat and Christine McQuire, Jill Fischer, Tony Grady, and a guy from my 11th grade sixth period study hall class. Overall, life has been good. In hind sight, I may have done some things differently; but overall, things turned out good for me. I have some very good memories of my high school days. I hope that all of you are doing well! Yours in friendship, Michael King '73 International School Bangkok 1970 - 1972 Fort Campbell High School 1972 -1973
