Michael's Story
I moved to Chesapeake, Virginia from Michigan in '2005. I live 3 miles from the Intracoastal waterway, 5 miles from the North Carolina state line and 5 miles from Virgina Beach and the ocean. I still don't know how to surf and I never will. When I was in high school in Battle Creek, MI, I bicycled at least 50 miles a week. I rode everywhere. Marshall, Kalamazoo, Athens, Sturgis, Hickory Corners. You name it. Since then, I've bicycled across Ireland and Scotland. I still bicycle ride here in Virginia all year round.
When I was growing up in Riverside, Illinois, I always thought that I would spend my whole life working and living in downtown Chicago. Or at least somewhere in Mi...Expand for more
chigan or in the Midwest. Instead, I've lived all over the U.S. and never in any house for more than 10 years. I never imagined in a million years that I would end up living in the South. It's funny how things turn out. At least I'm not in the Deep South (i.e., Alabama). Or Florida or Texas.
I drive back to Starved Rock State Park in central Illinois once a year. It's a 17 hour drive from Chesapeake, VA. I like long drives. I stay at the Starved Rock Lodge there. Going back this August with my brother Paul. I know almost every square foot of that park. If you are ever there and see an E55 with Virginia license plates in the Lodge parking lot, I'm nearby, hiking on a trail.
