Michael's Story
After graduating early from LHS ('78), I went on to UTA and finished degrees in Music and Education. Met the love of my life the month before college even began (Joni, from Bowie HS, '78), and we married in May of '82, after I had finished my degrees back in December of '81. Next year will be our 40th anniversary! We have three children, now all in their 30's, a girl and two boys, and three grandchildren, also a girl and two boys!. My wife and I are both teachers, although she has decided to finally retire as of this year, after a brilliant career in special education. As for me, this will be my 40th year of teaching, but I have no plans to retire, this year or ever. I love my work; in fact, most days, I can't wait to get to school! I currently serve as the Social Studies department Co-Chair for Dalton High School (AAAAAA, NW Georgia), and teach AP U.S. Government and Politics, U.S. History, U.S. Military History, and Theory of Knowledge (for our International Baccalaureate program). Earlier in my career, I also served as a high school band director, a mid...Expand for more
dle school band director, a high school choir director, and a driver's ed. teacher.....so there's not much I haven't seen! Besides teaching, my primary interests include snowboarding and caving. Snowboarding is strictly a seasonal activity, but caving is year-round....the region where Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee come together is considered one of the world meccas of cave exploration, especially vertical caving, and I'm underground whenever possible. I love it, but in this part of the country, with all the vertical drops involved, it's not for the faint of heart, and will kill you without the right training and gear. As for the rest of my time, it's taken up by yard work, genealogy research, and generally geeking out on all the history and mountain beauty of our area. It's not that Joni and I don't have good memories of our years in Texas, but we'll always be thankful that we had opportunity to move here instead. That being said, I'll always be a Cowboys fan....though I'd be a bigger one if Jerry Jones would stop being their owner!! Take care, everyone!
