Michael's Story
Life
The saga of the Landers clan began in Ellensburg, where Mike met and married Carol Burrows. After finishing graduate school, the pair moved back to Vancouver and both began making their marks in their respective career fields. After several years in various apartments, the little group included two small girls and finally moved into a house. With expansion room, the Landers tribe grew by leaps and bounds, growing to a family of eight, with three boys and three girls. As of 2005, the girls are each in a different school, which can cause temporary challenges to one's sanity keeping up with it all. We look forward with some trepidation to the day the baby starts kindergarten and the oldest starts her senior year!
In December of 2005 the balance of our happy little home tipped with the birth of Paul Joseph. He was the smallest at birth, edging out the oldest by half an ounce! He didn't stay that way for long, though, and is a very contented little guy who is blowing the lid off the growth charts (He's around 25 lbs.). body to shower him with love and attention, which no doubt explains why he is so happy.
In September of 2007, the scale was once again level as our family welcomed our eighth child, Lydia Marie.
Workplace
The first few months after finishing graduate school were hard, because it was the summer of the Gulf War and the job market had somewhat dried up. I was able to get some work as a contract clinician, but it took a couple of years to build up a strong professional reputation. As a musician, I joined the union and got some gigs, but the leader of the group had trouble with the rep and those gigs evaporated. After getting hooked up with some classical groups, I began to use performance as a means to make contacts for commissions. As a free-lance composer I have been able to work with a variety of ensembles and have written a number of works for band and orchestra. 1996 was a big year, as it was my first shot at the Pulitzer Prize with a 40 minute symphony for wind ensemble. More recent works have included a Lewis and Clark tribute, a 9-11 tribute, and many others.
