michael's Story
I received a Ph.D. in 1980 from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA., in German philosophy and literature. During this time, I worked as a carpenter, doing restoration work on old houses, but also building some lofts and decks. From 1982-84 I taught literature and linguistics in Dalian, China; then 5 years in Hiroshima, Japan, and until two years ago, I was full professor in a literature department at a 400-year-old Buddhist university in Kyoto. the guidebooks say is the most important undiscovered site in Kyoto, so if you are passing by, please stop in. I'm married to a composer who does commercial work for TV and movies and artistic work for Japanese animations. No kids, one cat.
I rarely go back to the US. Summer holidays were spent in Europe and spring holidays in Asia. Since retirement the agony of a long-haul flight have seemed worse than the possibilities of being elsewhere, so travel has been mainly driving trip in Japan.
