Life Born Chicago, IL 1936, moved to Grand Rapids, MI 1940. Went to Straight Ave Elementary School and then Union HS starting in 7th grade. Left Grand Rapids, MI in '51, moved to Phx, AZ & graduated PUHS in '54 (pre-engineering, Bus Mgr school paper). Learned Spanish in HS, taught myself Russian, became interested in foreign languages. Joined Army (see military below), worked for NSA. Spent 18 months in the small Bavarian village of Nottau near Czech border, living in farmhouse ('56-'57). Enrolled at Arizona State on GI Bill ('58), graduated in two years with a BA in German, minoring in Russian, Spanish, French, Astronomy ('60). Married ('59), had daughter Vicki Lee (March '61), divorced. Textbook Manager at ASU ('58-'61), moved to Calif to take position at UCLA ('61-'62 off-campus bookstore), married again ('62), then back to Phx at Martindale's Bookstore as Manager ('62), retired from book business. Moved back to CA in '63, head translator at EOS (translated tech reports for aerospace industry). Entered UCLA PhD program in Linguistics ('64); set up my own technical-translation agency ('65).
