Michael's Story
My last attempt at a 'story' here must have been eaten by the limbo gods! Suffice it to say that my sister Rochelle and I moved with our family from DC to New York. Then I traveled to Miami, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Virgin Islands, and several States. Also, we spent about four years in Tokyo earlier in our lives. Rochelle and I both ended up here in Utah where we have relatives.
I attended the University of Utah and received a BA degree in Psychology with minors in Spanish and Business, I also studied Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Computers on an Honors level. I did post-graduate studies in Addiction Treatment, specializing in Opioid Dependence Treatment and Substance Use Disorders.
I spent about 6 years building and troubleshooting computers for a large manufacturing company and an ISP, as well as testing products and providing tech support. I also performed and toured as a drummer in several Metal and Blues bands.
Speaking of music, for about 7 years, I managed a Rock n Roll nightclub and restaurant named Rafters in Salt Lake City. There I booked local and national bands, including acts like Hard Knox, Foghat, Slaughter, Mr. Big, Mötley Crüe, April Wine, Pantera - on their "Cowboys From Hell Tour", Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Saigon Kick, Soundgarden, Danzig, Savatage, Great White, Ratt, Ugly Kid Joe, Quiet Riot, Autograph, Wildside, Tuff, Warrant, Kansas, Peter Frampton, Dread Zeppelin, Steppenwolf, Faith No More, Tora Tora Tora (and many more). I was involved in a few MTV videos, including broadcasts with Riki Rachtman and his Cathouse Club from Los Angeles, some of which apparently, can still be found on YouTube.
I worked for IATSE, Local 99 as a Stagehand and specialized in Xenon Super Trouper spotlights (I was one of those people you see running spots up in the trusses near the ceiling at a concert). I worked for everyone from KISS to Cats In Concert and Phantom Of The Opera, to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chuck Berry, Stevie Wonder, Van Halen, Garth Brooks, and Metallica, to name a few of many.
I spent the last 10 years as a licensed Addictions Counselor, treating mostly Opioid Dependence and Addiction (Heroin & Rx pain meds), and methamphetamines and cocaine, etc. FYI, "Dependence" and "Addiction" are different components of Substance Use Disorders. They are NOT the same thing, but unfortunately for the patient, they're often treated as though they were.
I conducted study and research ...Expand for more
regarding the "mu" and other opioid receptors and the neurochemical aspects of Dependence and Addiction. This includes the Glutamate and Dopamine cycles in the brain: 'Like' vs 'Want'. But now, I'm recently retired and am having more fun than I ever remember having!
Years ago, I married a wonderful woman (better than I deserve) who has been the Program Manager of an MD/PhD graduate program (Neuroscience) at the University of Utah School of Medicine. They continue to host the Nobel Prize laureate for Medicine in 2007, Mario Capecchi, PhD, whose field involves research of Knockout Genes and Modeling Neuropsychiatric Disorders.
Together, my wife and I completed about four years of volunteer services in local Hispanic Communities. Out of our fifteen grandkids, four are Mexican from Oaxaca and they speak perfect English and Spanish with no accent in either language (an enviable gift to have)! My daughter makes the kids speak English at home, and they speak Spanish everywhere else. They also speak some Zapotec, which is their paternal Grandmother's language.
More recently, my wife and I were able to visit my family's cherished home on 24th Avenue and Catskill in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland, and I was thrilled to see some of the old woods remaining off 23rd Parkway down by Green Valley Elementary. I thought I was Robin Hood growing up in and around those woods ;->
All this aside, I've come to realize that a good life, for me, has more to do with appreciating what I have, rather than lamenting what I don't have. I often think about the friends my sister and I grew up with and hope everyone is doing well. I still have my old Potomac, Powhatan '71 yearbook and I get a kick out of looking at it once and awhile....and remembering.
Maryland and Upstate New York were fantastic places to live and grow up. My friends and my sister and I had some great times together, which we'll never forget! However, Utah has turned out to be a good place for us to live, especially without the humidity of the East.
PS - Sadly, my sister Rochelle passed away on March 11, 2021, but she is fondly remembered and missed. Rochelle and I frequently reminisced about our many friends and memorable times in Maryland and New York. There were so many of you and Rochelle would have loved to say goodbye to each of you. She maintained a great attitude to the end and never lost her curiosity or her sense of humor!
All the best to each of you!
