Michael's Story
Life
After high school I started with Highlands Maintenance Systems. I worked nights and went to college in the daytime. In 1973 Highlands sent me to The Franklin Institute, where I graduated with an Associates in Business Admin. That was 180 degrees from my Engineering Major, but I had a knack for sales and management (I was still at PSU). Highlands promoted me to Production Manager in 1974.
In 1975 Highlands transferred me to Denver as a District Manager. At 22 years I was a bit "green", but I was ready to rock Denver. Upon arriving I found the business in a shambles.
I immediately fired the Production Manager, and transferred Mike Freeman from Portland to take over the position. A month later Kathi followed (we had broken up - at age 20 I decided to quit fooling around and settle down - now the tables were turned).
The first summer in the Rockies was beautiful! But that first winter was very cold. After a year in Denver, Highlands owner Jim decided to sell the operation. The decision was made
to run each district as a franchise. Mike's dad drove his truck to Denver and helped us
move back. I finished school and went back to work for Highlands as the Portland Manager.
In 1980 Kathi and I were married. Although we had been together since high school, the marriage lasted all of six months! Kathi wound up moving to...Expand for more
Texas, and I spoke to her only a couple of times until she called me in 1995 to tell me she was battleing cancer. The summer of 1996 Becki called to invite us to Kathi's wake, which was held in Portland.
Kathi had a short and turbulent life - she is in a better place now...
In March of 1982 Mike Freeman and I met Paulette at the "White Eagle". Paulette and I have been together since. Along with the good times we have lost many of our loved ones this past twenty years: my Mom and Dad, Paulette's two sisters, one brother, and her Dad.
In 1983 I went into "high-tech", starting at Tektronix and ending at Hewlett Packard fifteen years later. Electronics manufacturing is a thing of the past in this country.
1999 found me at Circuit City, where I have held the positions of sales Counselor, Merchandise Manager, Sales Manager, and Operations Manager. I have returned to the Sales Manager position where I can really make a difference. The year and a half I was a Sales Manager, the store enjoyed record sales and profits.
I continue to play guitar, and have a small studio here. I still silversmith and do my own lapidary work - both cabachons and faceting, although my free time is less and less. The Porsche is under a tarp waiting for a synchro, and the Benz is in my garage waiting on a valve job. Ah, for some more free time...
