Michael's Story

December 2008 - I mostly hung out with Chris Vouras, Tom Maurstad and Jimmy Leftwich, as well as Martha Page (WTW '81), Laurie Cochran, Jeanne Teague, Tom Barry and a bunch of Jesuit friends during high school. I was friends with David Rowe for many years before he was taken from us at such an early age. I had lots of friends over the years from Marcus, Marsh, White and Skyline. I think back fondly on all of them. I was a band geek back at Marsh Jr. High, but managed to get myself kicked out of band by high school. During high school, I attended Skyline in the mornings (for photography) and White in the afternoons during the 10th and 11th grades. I went back to White full time my senior year. I discovered sort of by accident on the last day of the first semester (trimester? ...can't remember) that I had enough credits to graduate and ended up leaving school early. I had turned 18 by then so I started bartending at the Chateaubriand restaurant (McKinney, near downtown); a job I loved. The fall of '79, I began college at UT Austin and stayed there for a few years. I again hung out with Tom Barry, Tom Maurstad, Mike Leppert, Morgan Roberts and his brother Clayton, among others, where I spent most of my time slacking and partying (I didn't find my first class until a week and a half after it started). It still breaks my heart that Morgan didn't survive those years. In 1982, after I got a little more serious about school, I attended CTC and ATU in Killeen, TX where I g...Expand for more
raduated with a BS in Aviation Management. I ended up working for a small airline in Killeen (Rio), worked on a few airmen certificates (Commercial/Instrument Pilot and Aircraft Dispatch ratings), met my wife Linda, a fellow student and a flight attendant at Rio and we started a family. We also lived in Austin and Dallas a few years each while I bounced from one airline to another working as a dispatcher. After Braniff (II) went under, we moved to the Memphis, TN area in 1989 where I went to work for FedEx. After jobs as a dispatcher, ATC coordinator, fuel analyst and ATC analyst, I currently manage a group of Air Traffic Coordinators for FedEx Global Operations Control. I never did use any of my pilot ratings or photography skills (so much for that education!). Linda and I have four kids, ages from 24 to 10, and a 5 year old granddaughter. Linda is an R.N. in the Methodist ER. Our oldest daughter, Lauren, is a manager for Panera Bread and the mother of our granddaughter, Bethany. Our daughter Jessica, after a serious car accident in 2004, had to leave school at Ole Miss and now lives at home with us. Our son, Michael, attends UT Knoxville and also recently graduated in the first class at the UT Culinary Institute. Our youngest, Ryan, is in the 5th grade. I still have family and friends back in Dallas and we make that trip once or twice a year. I would love to hear from my old friends and acquaintances, so feel free to contact me. I'm on 'bellsouth.net' as 'mmmcafee'.
