Michael's Story
I am the regional director of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in Chicago. We are involved in anti-war, peace and social justice work. Specifically we work organizing immigrant taxi drivers in Chicago, work for peace in the Middle East, and counter military recruitment in the Chicago high schools. I was national co-coordinator of the U.S> sanctuary movement in the 1980s, giving refuge to Salvadoran and Guatemalan refugees fleeing the violence in Central America. I am married with three children: Sarah (35) and about to be a mother for the first time; Daniella (22) a recent graduate of Denison University and now working with Starcom in Chicago and Johnny (17) a junior in high school looking at colleges for 2012. My wife Maricela is one of the directors of the Nationa Council of La Raza, the largest Latino civil rights organization in the U.S.
