Michael's Story

Well it looks like I have enough signatures in my guest book that I need to update and review this page. Starting with graduation in 72, but being that most of you were there with me, I won't dwell on that. After graduation I moved to Aberdeen, WA to accept a job. In the fall of 72 I accepted Christ as my personal savior. Now this is where the story gets a little interesting. I attended Grays Harbor CC for two years. I felt a call to the ministry and transferred to Eugene Bible College in Eugene,OR, a small Pentecostal training college. There I met Lynda Johnsen and fell so madly in love that we were married in the summer of 1975. We have two children, Connor and Bethany. Each is very special to me in so many ways. Lynda and I moved around some when jobs or lack there of required it. I didn't finish college or get into a paid position. My parents died within 8 months of each other and I guess I was a little bummed by it. I dropped out of school and went to work in the real world. Through the years I have been a cook (a rather good one at that), A refrigeration mechanic and now, a journeyman electrician. I guess you could say it took me a while to settle down. I didn't turn my back on the Lord. I have tried to be faithful to his call to serve in whatever way He needs me. One high point durring college was my singing in the choir. On our Spring tour in 1975 we got caught in a blizzard in Weed, CA. Yes, I did say spring. We holed up at the Catholic parish hall which was the local travellers relief center. When everyone got a little hungry, the choir director asked me to see what I could fix for about 40 people. I dicided that Spaghetti might hit the spot si I went to the local Safeway and picked up the neccesary ingredients. The choir directed started loading jars of Ragu into the cart and I unloaded them. I was competent to make the sauce from scratch and wouldn't have it any other way. By the time we got back to the church the crowd had grown to more that fifty. Not a problem, I had expected this might happen and bought extra Pasta and French bread. Make the sauce a little thinner and everyone eats. Not exactly Loaves and Fishes but it worked. Enough of the anecdotes though if you want more I have dozens of them. Through the years, as we moved around we attended many different churches. We've be...Expand for more
en In Portland now for about 24 years. Nine years ago our neighbors invited us to their church, Murray Hills Christian Church, a Disciples congregation. We found it to be a good fit and have been members since 1999. Lynda teaches Sunday School and a mid-week knitting class. I am an Elder with about 12 families to look after. One of the perks is that I am called on to give meditations and prayers for the Offering and Comunion about once a month. I am limited to 3 minutes for my little sermonettes So I try to be succinct and to the point, though you might not believe it given the way I'm rambling here. It's hard to write your life story in 25 words or less. Sufice it to say that we are happy, healthy and looking forward to retirement in about 10 years, when we intend to travel and stay out of Yuma. If you would like mare information send me an e-mail and I'll give more information. Oh, yes that's me at the tope of this page. My hair is almost gone and my ears really are that big. 2011: Blink your eyes and the whole world shifts sideways. I'm retired, not exactly in a good way but retired none-the-less. I found out about 15 years ago that I had inherited a neuro-muscular disease from one of my parents. Don't know which one as they had both passed several years earlier. I didn't pay much attention to it; I didnt know about it untilI was 42 and had not experienced any symptoms, so I just kind of blew it off. About two or three years ago symptoms began showing up, loss of muscle mass, coordination, joint pain and more. In March of this year my employer insisted that I see my neurologist for an evaluation that would determine fitness to work. I flunked. Iam currently living on short term disability and in a couple of months will go on Social Security. Update 10/2011: As I said, I am retired but I'm not wearing out any rocking chairs. I've found lots of volunteer work to fill my time and I am really enjoying it. I work in a food pantry. do hospital visitation and will be driving for Meals On Wheels as soon as I get a few health issues resolved. There are some other opportunities on the horizon that I look forward to exploring. My intent is to stay productive and contribute to the common good of the community. I'll appreciate your prayers and wishes for good luck. It's going to be an interesting ride.
