Michael's Story
Life
Married with three daughters, the oldest graduated from TCU and is married, the second graduated from TCU and is an officer in the U.S. Army deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, and the youngest is a sophomore at a local community college.
Live in Visalia, CA, where I pastor a church and my wife is a branch manager at a local bank.
Education
Went to Diablo Valley JC right out of HS, and then spent the next three years in the Army to include a vacation in Vietnam. After that returned to college and after jumping around a few different schools I finally graduated from San Jose State with a BA in Psych. Went on to a theological seminary in Wake Forest, NC, for a Masters of Divinity. I think one of my favorite lines in a song is from "Kodachrome" by Paul Simon, "When I think back on all the crap I learned in high school, its a wonder I can think at all!" I would add college to that as well. There is a lot to be said for actual experience!
Military
Spent twenty-nine years in the U.S. Army, twenty-one on active duty and eight in the Reserves. The first nine years I was a Military Policeman, and I served as a chaplain for the last twenty. Spent a tour in Vietnam and in the Midd...Expand for more
le East for Desert Shield and Storm, plus six years in Germany and stateside assignments in California, Georgia, Oklahoma, New Jersey, New Mexico, and Texas.
Interests
Remain pretty active, although nothing like my younger years. Competed in probably over 100 running races, mainly 10Ks, and a few marathons. Got into triathlons and as a result got more involved in cycling. Cycled across France on two occasions.
Love to backpack, go every year to a different spot up in the Sierras. Took up SCUBA and the list goes on and on. As I get older I find myself narrowing the field more and more...mainly a matter of time. Love to travel and have set a goal of hitting all 50 states and 50 countries, to date I have 47 states and 40 countries. Was able to do something in 2007 I've always wanted to do, and that was to participate in an archaeological dig in Israel (Bethsaida), a lot of work, but was very rewarding. Love to read about history, theology, sociology, biblical studies, religious studies, anthropology...don't have time to read fiction. I prefer listening to music v. watching the boob tube, unless there is something good on the history channel or its college football season.
