Michael's Story

Life Shane Mitchell, Class of 1993 Bryan Station High School Lexington, KY After graduating high school, I attended the University of Kentucky where I majored in Music Education with an emphasis in saxophone. While there, I enlisted in the 100th Division US Army Reserve Band in 1994. More importantly, I met my wife, Kelly, in the Reserve Band. Kelly is a Mason, Ohio native and a pretty fine percussionist. I graduated UK in December of 1998. We married in May of 1999. At the same time, I returned to Bryan Station High School to be the Assistant Band Director under Shawn Parrish. Shawn and I had some great years together at Bryan Station. We increased the number of participants in the program, and the students earned distinguished ratings in marching band competitions and concert band festivals. Some of our highlights were marching at the 1999 Liberty Bowl with BB King, and also marching at Disney World in 2002. During my time at Bryan Station, Kelly and I also increased our family size. Noah Emmett came into our lives in April 2001, and Madeline Holly joined us very shortly after that in May 2002. As anyone can imagine, it has been absolutely wonderful. I love being the family man! In July 2003, I was offered the Band Director position at LaRue County High School in Hodgenville, KY. Hodgenville is about 10 minutes southeast of Elizabethtown, 45 minutes south of Louisville, or 90 minutes from Lexington. Kelly, the kids, and I were ready for a change. Mostly, this move allowed Kelly the opportunity to stay at home with our children, and offered me the opportunity to be in charge of my own program. Since being with the Larue County Band of Hawks, we have had some exciting times. Along with the help of the Assistant Band Director, Matthew Baucum, we have had some major highlights. Some of those include: Fall 2003 - 16th Place State Semi-finals, Class AA Spring 2004 - Distinguished Rating at concert festi...Expand for more
val, Grade IV Spring 2004 - Trip to New York City Fall 2004 - 4th Place State Finals, Class A Spring 2005 - Distinguished Rating at Concert festival, Grade IV Spring 2005 - 100% participation in solo and ensemble festival Fall 2005 - 7th Place State Semi-Finals, Class AAA Spring 2006 - Currently working on this one While the Band of Hawks has kept us extremely busy, Kelly and I have also been working on our Army Reserve careers. We have both obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6). We have attended all of our necessary courses such as PLDC, BNCOC, Phases 1, 2 and 3. That has kept our weekend and summer schedule quite full. If all goes right, Kelly will be promoted to Sergeant First Class (E-7) in July of this year, and I will be promoted in December. We plan to do at least our 20 years of service to earn retirement. We have also been extremely busy keeping up our civilian education. I received a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Eastern Kentucky University in July 2005. Kelly is working on her Master's Degree in Elementary Education at the University of Louisville. Her Bachelor's Degree is in Integrated Strategic Communications, or in layman's terms, advertising and public relations. She is working with a U of L program that helps professionals from other fields obtain their teaching certification. We are also trying quite hard to work on the spiitual part of our lives. We have become members at First Baptist Church in Hodgenville. I have been involved with the church orchestra. Kelly has become extremely involved. She has played with the handbell choir, and began teaching a Sunday night and Wednesday night children's church group. Noah and Madeline have been attending their respective classes as well. And Noah began playing basketball with the Church's Upward Bound progam. From what I can tell, this pretty much puts my life since high school in a nutshell. Sincerely, Shane Mitchell
