Michael's Story

Life After graduating High School, I went to Jones County Jr College for a year then went to USM for two years majoring in chemistry then changing to electrical engineering. I got my Ham Radio license (WB5ZES) in 1976. In March 1978, I chucked it all and joined the US Navy. After completing 20 years of working in the Navy's data processing/computer field, I retired and went to work as a Navy contractor at COMNAVAIRLANT supporting the non-tactical shipboard computer systems and their supply departments on the east coast aircraft carriers. I went back to school in 2005 and finally finished my BS degree in Computer Information Systems at Saint Leo College in 2008. I currently work as a Programmer/Analyst for the Police Department in Norfolk Virginia. School Those years were just a blur. Should have been more involved, missed out on a lot. College Back at it again after a 27 year break, I finally graduated from St Leo University at the South Hampton Roads branch with a BS degree in Computer Information Systems. I should have done this earlier, much earlier. Workplace After retiring from the Navy, I w...Expand for more
orked for CACI Inc. at COMNAVAIRLANT as a contractor supporting Atlantic Fleet carriers and their ADP divisions. I also did software utility development in Visual FoxPro. I currently work as a Programmer/Analyst for the Police Department in Norfolk Virginia. Military My first duty station was the USS Forrestal CV-59 where I worked as a keypunch operator and computer operator. After that I was stationed at the Navy Regional Data Automation Center in New Orleans and worked as a computer programmer. From there I went to Keflavik, Iceland and worked in the ASWOC. After a long year there I was transferred to the USS Yellowstone AD-41 and became the supervisor of the non-tactical computer room. When I transferred to shore duty, I went to the Navy Management Systems Support Office and spent 3 years providing technical support to the east coast large platform ships. I took a split tour and was assigned to working as the ADP supervisor at Assault Craft Unit 4 working with hover crafts. For my last tour of duty, I was part of the commissioning crew for the USS John C. Stennis CVN-74 working as the ADP supervisor.
