Michael's Story
I'll try not to elicit too many yawns here....
Left Iowa in '87 and never looked back. Basically, moved to Texas and currently live east of Dallas in a small town called Forney with my wife and children. Got a degree in Electronics in '89 and went to work in the professional Audio/Video industry, primarily as a service tech, but also doing large scale installations of every kind of A/V and control gear imaginable.
Started working on high end video projectors and was eventually one of the best in the industry, working on all the top names and factory certified for every projector manufacturer on the planet; one of which was a company called Electrohome (think, GE of Canada). Don't worry, this has relevance in a moment....
After working for a couple different companies in this capacity, I helped found and build a small company in really high end residential A/V systems as VP and Systems Engineer, but we still did plenty of commercial/professional systems as well. This company won several national CEDIA awards for the systems I designed and my crews installed. For a small company, we had a lot of industry respect. Eventually, it was time to move on though.
Remember that company called Electrohome?...well they merged with another company called Christie and became Christie Digital. This is the premier projector manufacturer in the world...I don't say that flippantly - all the industry peers say that. Christie Digital is a company that most have never heard of, but you see us absolutely everywhere. Watch the news? (FOX, CNN, Weather Channel, NBC, Colbert Report, etc, etc), all those pretty screens behind the talking heads....all Christie on rear screens. See Avatar in 3D? It was on a Christie....Christie is in approximately 85% of all digital and film cinema's across the US. (and the majority player throughout the world). See any concerts? Those giant screens with the performers on them are almost a...Expand for more
lways stacked Christies on huuuuuge screens. Go to church? House of worship's love us - we're everywhere. The one place we're not, is Home Theater (much to my chagrin). :) But that will probably change....some day.
So, if you haven't figured it out by now, I work for Christie as a Field Application Engineer Manager and run a group of 14 of the most talented guys in the projection industry. It's a very rewarding career and I'm blessed with working for one of the most dynamic, best run corporations out there. Its also nice to work with the industry leading technology and have outstanding personnel to work with too. Since I travel constantly, I'm what you'd call a moving target, usually putting in about 120,000 air-miles a year.
For those who remember me (a little), I'm still a gear head and love working on/restoring old cars. My current project, while nothing special, is still fun. An older 82 Dodge pickup with a rip-snortin' 440 big block in it that'll boil the tires as long as I've got my foot in it.
Still a woodworker and do carpentry as well. Built (I mean I did) a 1000 sq ft shop for all my toys and fun stuff. Have a car lift in it, big air compressor, etc so working on cars is now a joy instead of a nightmare. Replaced all 4 struts in my car recently in about 2 hours....try that working on jack-stands in your driveway! Anyway, have a nice wood shop in it as well and that's where my office will be if I ever have time to finish it. Travel can do that to you....
I have a couple older stepsons and 3 other kids - all boys, ranging from the 20's down to 5 yrs old. and a beautiful wife of 11 years. We live out in the country a little bit, so we've got a nice, big, one acre yard for the kids to play and a big home to put everyone in. There's lots more, but time's limited....So life's been pretty good to me - no complaints here (other than lack of time....). Ok, y'all can wake up now...its over. :)
