Michael's Story

Life Short bio: Got a Culinary Arts degree from CCC in 1979, and was a Chef in Bay Area for 8 years before moving from San Francisco to Bexley, Ohio in 1987. I rode my motorcycle across the country to get here. I married Janet in 1987. Had our first child (boy) in 1990, then another (girl) in 1994. Went back to college in 1990 to study Architecture 3 years, then changed major in 1995 to Industrial Design. Went to Manchester, England on a scholarship in 1998-1999 to study design and tour Europe. Got second BS degree in 2001 in IT. In a bad auto accident in 2001 and hurt back; took 3 yrs to recuperate. Started my own business in 2002. My Dad passed away last summer; my Mom 8 summers before that. Purchased another BMW motorcycle last year, as I still love to travel. And I always miss California when it is cold and snow covered in Ohio! School I had such a fantastically huge crush on one fiery redheaded beauty. She was like an Amazon, that Nancy Amador, who I had one dance with at an honor society party. And then afterwards I remained under her hypnotic spell for another three or thirty years. Trying to talk to her always seemed so awkward after that dance, and so the relationship went absolutely nowhere! Invariably when see any redhead nowadays, its hard not think of the way she nervously caressed me during that long slow dance so many years ago! Motorcycling To fill you in on a little of my motorcycling history: I had a friend that lived across the street from me in Rollingwood, Steven Beavers, whose family all had dirt bikes. My first ride ever was on a Honda 50cc bike in his backyard around on an oval dirt path. I hopped on, twisted the throttle wide open and promptly went straight into the fence at the opposite end of the yard! Unhurt, and undeterred, I later mastered that bike, and we would have a blast just going around and around that back yard circuit. My guess is that was around 1972 when I got on for that first ride. Then we later went to the hills in Richmond to ride in the dirt on his Yamaha Enduro 250. In the summer of 1982, and ten years removed from those early years of dirt riding, I went by the showroom of Richmond Motors, to get some tool I needed for the rebuilding of the engine for my 1969 Volkswagen Beetle. I went in and immediately that old longing for a bike returned when I saw all the new bikes there. I remember going back in to sit on that first motorcycle I saw that caught my eye there. I returned at least ten more times again to look at it before I took the plunge and eventually purchased it a month later. That first bike: a new 1982 BMW R65, a 650cc naked bike in metallic turquoise green with gold hand painted pinstripes on the tank. That engine was a lot like the Beetles, horizontally opposed but with two fewer cylinders, and the simplicity of it was one of the things that attracted me to it. With a full leather motorcycle suit, touring gear, and lust for travel, I went all over California for the five years that I had it. For about two years it was my only mode of transportation, and I commuted between San Francisco and Emeryville with it till it had about 28,000 miles on it and I got the bug for a faster machine with more wind protection. Then in 1985 BMW came out with a radically new bike design ...Expand for more
with the K100. The engine was a compact inline four-cylinder variety with fuel injection that broke from the tradition BMW had with the boxer engine bikes. I had been going to a BMW dealer in Mountain View for service and when I saw the new bike I began lusting again for a new ride. Then in 1986 I sold the R65 and got a new 1985 BMW K100RS. It was fast, smooth, handled great and had a sporty full fairing with integrated adjustable windscreen. I set it up for touring like the R65 with top case, extra large tank bag, touring side bags and I even got a heated seat and hand grips so I could tour all year round. With a rain suit and sport leather suit, boots, and gloves, and heated motorcycle apparel, I could go anywhere all the time. It was such a blast to ride and with it I explored all the back roads all over the Bay Area and beyond. And I took it across the country when I moved from Berkeley to Columbus, Ohio in the summer of 1988. I have found that the state of Ohio has an abundance of great motorcycling roads and more rural areas and easier access to them by only a short ride from the city. So since 1988 I have been zigzagging all over this states back roads with one exception, during the too long winter months when we get snow, torrential rain and freezing temperatures. The layup is something of a hardship when all I can do is look at my bike, cozy and wrapped up in the garage, and long to get out on the road. In 2001 I had racked up more that 38,000 miles on the K bike before I sold it two months after I had a car accident, that left me too spooked to ride, or drive for that matter. Two years went by till my back was better, my fear had somewhat cleared, and I began to get the itch to ride again. In the fall of 2003 I started to search for the next bike. I looked at the new ones, but I found a perfect used 1998 BMW R1100 SE at a local dealer with only 1,001 miles on it. It is a special 75th anniversary edition of the oil head Boxer designed bikes. Its got glossy black paintwork with white pinstripes, hand painted on the gas tank and side covers, metallic silver engine parts and frame tubes, alloy rims with chrome spokes and Bosch fuel injection. I visited it several times in the showroom and test rode it for about 150 miles before I decided to get it. It is a retro naked design like that old R65, but the previous owner had set it up for touring-with a tall windscreen, heated grips, ABS brakes, crash bars, cushy suspension, two large touring cases, huge lighted top case, expanding electrified tank bag and waterproof extras, it is the perfect long distance touring machine. Since I got it we have been to the last three National BMW Rallies, and numerous smaller BMW rallies. Last season I rode 11,000 miles and had a great trip with friends up to Montreal to watch the F1 Gran Prix on the race island. I ride most weekends with a group of friends, all in my immediate neighborhood with Beemers too, and right now, since we have just experienced the first blizzard here in Columbus in 15 years, all I can think of is removing its moto cover and battery tender, hopping on it and getting out on the twisty back roads again. Well, right now I'm hoping for a quick thaw, an end to winter, and riding to a few of the early BMW spring rallies.
