Michael's Story

It's amazing that, now, almost 50 years have passed since high school and walking across the stage on the football field to accept my diploma. East Henderson. Class of 74. Incredible. A short bio: I graduated from Appalachian State University in 1978. I was in the Peace Corp in Togo as a school construction volunteer. I later joined the Army and stayed in service for 23 years, retiring in 2002 as a Chief Warrant Officer in Military Intelligence. I only retired to accept a federal government civilian job; otherwise, I would have stayed in for 30 years. In January 2002, I accepted a job and joined the U.S. Department of State Foreign Service in 2002 and served as a Management Officer until 30 April 2021 when I had to retire at 65. During my second career, I served in Bogota, Colombia; Baghdad, Iraq; Kolonia, Micronesia; Conakry, Guinea; Islamabad, Pakistan; Kabul, Afghanistan; Kinshasa, Congo; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Basrah, Iraq; and Nairobi, Kenya (my last post before retirement). Married and divorced, I have since remarried. I have two grown sons from my first marriage, both of whom are college graduates and fully successful. Neither had any student debt upon graduating. My oldest son is an Information Management Specialist in the Foreign Service; like father like son. He has the gypsy in his blood. My youngest son now works for one of the largest makers of casino gambling equipment in the U.S. as a programmer in Las Vegas. He was also a globe-trotter for two years until COVID brought him back to the USA. While traveling, he designed computer games and worked out of a backpack, underwriting the cost of his international travels. In sum, I am a proud father. I remarried in 2006 to Helen Estudillo. We met while I was on official business in Manila, Philippines. Like a good trooper, she's accompanied me on all my subsequent tours to include service in Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan. As of this moment, I am comfortably ret...Expand for more
ired since 1 May 2021. My last FS assignment was at U.S. Embassy Nairobi, Kenya where I was the Supervisory General Services Officer. Prior to arriving in Nairobi in June 2018, I served one year in U.S. Consulate General Basrah, Iraq as the Management Officer. Before that, I was in the Yemen Affairs Unit at Consulate Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for 18 months from November 2015 to April 2017 as part of a small team managing the evacuated U.S. Embassy in Sanaa, Yemen. Unfortunately, the news is not getting better in the Middle East currently, and the likelihood of returning to Sanaa is remote. Update, it is still evacuated and the ongoing conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen continues with many civilian deaths and consequent other problems, including food insufficiency and many medical problems. Helen and I returned to North Carolina and home upon retirement. We have a house in Zirconia on Green River where I grew up, in the southeast part of Henderson County. My Mom passed away in 1997 at 64 from breast cancer and my Dad passed away in 2014 at 88. I have a good part of the old homestead, and I bought my brothers out and now own my Dad's house, which I had renovated and now rented. I'm currently working part-time as the Henderson County Library courier, moving the book collections around the county and among the give branch libraries and main in Hendersonville. It's a great job: MWF mornings and 18 hours per week, sufficient for me. Unfortunately, I have missed all class reunions; although, I do have a picture of one from several years ago - 2004. I had the chance to get together with Becky McCall (Jackson) and some others in 2005. It was so great to see some old faces. Some had changed and others had not. I do hope that we have another reunion at some point in the future, particularly our 50th anniversary next year, as I do plan to attend! Looking forward to hearing from you about your lives beyond East Henderson High School.
