Michael's Story
Life
I moved to Boulder, CO in 1989 and lived here for about 6 months and then came back to Lakewood and slid right back into my old job and apt building. I met my first wife in Lakewood (Kathleen Chippi from N. Olmstead) and we moved to Boulder together in April 1992 where I have been ever since. I worked in a ski shop here playing in the mountains and being a political/enviornmental and social reform activist (a shameless agitator). Our motto at that time was "If you don't have an FBI file yet, you're not trying hard enouph."
Kathleen and I opened a traveling bakery in August of 94 where we would bake cookies in Boulder, package them and travel the country selling them at varoius festivals. After about 2 years of that I quit the business and she and I split. She went on with the business and I got my job in the ski shop back. I usually refer to her as my friend formerly known as my wife.
From 1996 to 2001 I spent a lot of time playing music mostly arount Boulder/Denver/Ft. Collins area in a singer/songwriter format. In 1998 I ran for the Colorado State House of Representatives as the Libertarian canidate. I lost but had a blast running,on top of learning a lot. I did really well for a 3rd party canidate, I received 4.2% of the vote (996 votes). The local sheriff even came into the ski shop I worked at to congratulate me on how well I did. I didn't know if I should be excited that he knew who I was or worried.
In the spring of 2000 I recorded a CD, "Welcome To My World" under my own record lable Dreamer Music Productions and Ear Candy Records. I picked up the CD's in May and hit the road. I traveled throughout the Mid West, East Coast, Mid Atlantic and New England states playing music. I came back to Boulder in September and started working at the ski shop again. I was kind of wondering what I was gonna do next.
Shortly after getting back I ended up re-meeting my now wife. She and I had kind of known each other from around the neighborhood for years but one of her best friends moved into my house so I got the chance to get to know her better. We started dating around Christmas 2000 and were married on June 2nd, 2001. She had a 6 year old son Jake at the time and now we have a 1 year old son, Simon. We had already set the date to be married for June 2nd and then found out she was pregnant in May. Luckily she still fit into the dress she bought. We got married on the deck of a friends house in the mountains. Besides playing the wedding myself we had 3 other local singer/songwriter musicians play and a big barbeque!
So now that I was gonna be the sole income for a family of 4, I quit the ski shop after a 9 year on/off relationship and got a job as a delivery driver with a...Expand for more
local Natural Spring Water bottling/delivery company. Driving turned out not to be my thing so I moved to Customer Service where I was promoted to Customer Service Manager after just 3 months. Things are going really well for me. Much more epic and adventurous than I would have ever dreamed when I was in High School. One of my many sayings is that "Nothing grand ever came of moderation!" (Also the name of my music publishing company). I still play music around Denver/Boulder here and there. Not as much as I'd like but as the baby gets older I envision a return to the more epic days of being a musician again. We have plans to move to Chicago sometime in the next couple of years. Boulder is pretty and for outdoor enthusiasts it's a mecca, but it's wicked f*****g expensive. We also want more in the way of cultural, art and racial/ethnic diversity. Boulder is very homogonous and lacks a Metropolitan excitement. We also want to be closer to family. (Amy is from Missouri).
Signing off for now and thank you for your patience with my rambling! If you want a copy of my CD e-mail me at myklperkins "at" yahoo "dot" com and I will send you one. They usually cost $10.00 but if you are an old friend I will give you one, and I suppose if you were interested enouph to read this far, you must be an old friend!
School
I suppose the thing I liked about school the best was the opportunity to meet all kinds of unique and interesting people. I am still in contact with many of those people through a variety of ways. I would never want to go back and be a teenager again but I'm glad I did it once (like I had a choice). It certainly provided me with many opportunities to learn and grow and Lakewood High was a big part of that. If anyone knows how to get a hold of Bob Fox, give him my e-mail address. myklperkins "at" yahoo "dot" com. (I have to disguise the email address or it gets blocked.)
***************
That was written sometime in 03. It's now August 2008 and I have since moved my family to Springfield MO, where my former wife is from. We have since split but remain amicable.
For the first 5 years we lived here, I was the sales manager for a candle manufacturer in Ozark, MO (just south of Springfield). That got old with all the traveling I had to do (I hate traveling away from my kids though I love traveling with them). That, and as the sales manager, I was #3 in the company, as high up as I could get considering my boss, the VP, was the owner's daughter. I didn't see her going anywhere anytime soon.
I now work for FEDEX doing customs brokerage during the day and perform music in local pubs, restaurants and coffee shops by night. It's good to be playing music on a more regular basis again.
