Michael's Story
Life
I guess a quote from the Grateful Dead would sum up my life since graduation; "what a long, strange trip its been..." The grass (pun intended) looked greener and the neon lights a little brighter just over the horizon. One problem, I always brought myself and it was always the same thing, just new faces.
I got married in '82 to my bartender in Dallas, seemed perfect for an alcoholic, I had arrived! Worked there for 2 years which is pretty incredible for an alcoholic who liked to drink profits and give away booze. We had 2 sons, Gabriel and Michael.
We split up in '91 and I started to roam the country lost in an alcoholic haze. I got very sick and was told by doctors I could expect to live 6 more months the way I was living.
I was homeless and spending more and more time in the hospitals with liver problems, seizures, malnutrition, broken bones, etc., from my life style. Did see alot of places though!
I went into long term treatment in early '96 in south FL. I stayed there a year then moved to Titusville, FL where I took a job as a maintenance man at a water...Expand for more
front condominium complex where I later became manager.
I was sober 2 years when my ex-wife showed up with the kids and told me it was my turn! So I was newly sober, single parent, without a clue as to what I was doing. Cool, I can do this.
My kids are raised and both live within a mile of me. I'm still sober and semi-sane...will have 13 years clean next March. I quit the management position as I lived where I worked and hated the politics, especially after I became an condo owner at the complex.
Met a great lady (Donna) while at the condos, we both sold our condos and bought a house together. I went to work for a local Realtor and do maintenance on about 150 units (condos, apts, houses, etc.)
I have a great job and lots of freedom in it. We love to take cruises and can't wait for our next one. My parent live 2 hours away on the gulf coast and they are both in good health. All in all life is good.
I get to Monroe as often as I can as I still have family there. I love to see the town and the old places as well as the new. Monroe will always be home to me.
