Michael's Story

I always wanted to be a mailman when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. I would run long distances, play soccer, tennis, basketball, etc. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have independence,, creativity, and variation to be able to deal with the day-to-day. It comes from the little train that could. I grew up in the small town of Culver, Indiana, where I lived the first 18 years of my life. Then I moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where I studied for one and a half years as a Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies major. Through IU Bloomington I traveled oversease to Lima, Peru where I studied at the Universidad Católica for one full year and then I finished my undergraduate education in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I studied at the Universidade de Sao Paulo. The reason I moved to Peru and Brazil, respectively, was to improve my Spanish and Portuguese. When I finished my B.A., I moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where I earned my M.A. in Spanish. Then I went to the University of Texas at Austin, where I earned my Ph.D. in Ibero-Romance Philology and Linguistics. After spending four years in Austin, Texas (1977-1981), I moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where I was Director of Hispanic Linguistics at Louisiana State University. From there I moved to Miami in January, 1983, where I accepted full time employment as an Assistant Professor of Spanish. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Earl Williams, because he was very intelligent and unique.. I really enjoy watchinig sports games that are at a high level, competitive and with constant teamwork and cooperation, such as basketball and soccer. My biggest surprise was when my Peruvian wife and mother of our four children died when she was 39 when our children were 10, 7, 4 and 1. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the office and add on a guest's room.. My dream home would be one that is simple and accommodating.. Each of my four kids is totally different, and I have learned to respect them as ...Expand for more
thouhtful human beings who often know better than I do. I would love to see my mentor in Hispanic LInguistics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Norman P. Sacks. When he told me I should go to Georgetown for my Ph.D., Georgetown offered me a full fellowship and a lot of money; on the other hand, when he said I should not study in a given school, I was not accepted. If I won $100 million, I'd give part of it to trust, then spend the rest on healthy food, St. Jude's Hospital and travelling.. Yes, I did. I moved out of the dorm into the Spanish and Portuguese house where I could have my own room. To be truly happy, it does not matter where I am. However, I would have to time to spend and enjoy interesting conversation with family and close friends. My current age is 55. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be over the hill. I was so completely wrong. I translate a wide array of documents between Spanish, Portuguese and English, and interpret in courts and conferences, in addition to being an expert witness on language translation in a number of cases. I asked her to the 11th grade prom. After that, I don't recall. I have no style when I dress. My current wife (second wife) does help me at least match my clothes, and keeps me somewhat in style. I could care less about style I share my home with my stepdaughter, her husband and their baby, which I find great at times and challenging at other times.. In 10 years, I hope to be able to travel more. I'm going to get there by downsizing my expenses. I met my oldest friend in pre-K, and we both see each other now in Miami, where we both live. It would probably be the success I have had in college and graduate work. I didn't blossom academically until afater high school. My first job was at a pickle factory, where I got paid $1.60 per hour to sweep up broken pickle jars. What I remember most about it is since I was 16, I could not turn off the conveyor belt when several jars were breaking.. When I was 8 years old and our dog, Dash, ate one of my plastic spacemen.
