Michael's Story
Life
It's been nearly 20 years since we left California. I teach in Phoenix, AZ, the future doers and dreamers, all the while content to know that Manuel's still sells the Special burrito (had one in December, will have one soon enough). Like many, I have raised nostalgia to an art form. My son, Andre, now 25, is pursuing his dreams in China and my daughter, Daniela, now 21, is ready to become. wait for it, a teacher. te the bland cafeteria food, hear the disco music in the gazebo, remember my locker combination, and pop the latest pimple; I'm supposed to be doing something or another, getting ready for the 50th year reunion in 2031. Hopefully, by then, I would have finished the novel set in those daze, and the Pico Gardens housing projects in particular. Now that it has been years since it was torn down, I miss it more.
What do I miss the most? The carefreeness, the utter lack of a world view, and the jokes; especially the jokes.
