Michael's Story
Life
Married a cute Canadian 42 years ago and now have 8 children (true!) That's 5 girls and 3 boys, with a set of twins in the middle. Now we have 7 grandchildren.
I'm a very late bloomer with Chemistry BS(93) and Civil Engineering MS(2000) from BYU. Its never too late to learn. I was a Laboratory Director at a city water department and am a water quality specialist. I'm now retired and have a woodworking business at home.
I lived for two years in Bolivia as an LDS missionary ('80-82). I am Spanish conversational and learned a tiny bit of Quechua (Bolivian Inca) and Keqchi' (Guatemala Mayan) enough to amuse the adults and make the children laugh.
For 12- years was involved in lots of humanitarian work in Guatemala, Bolivia, and Peru. Look up "Water For People" at water4people.org and CHOICEHumanitarian.org. I lead expeditions for CHOICE into Guatemala and Bolivia. In the rural areas we help build (working along with the locals) schools, health facilities, provide medical and dental clinics, build latrines and provide safe drinking water through development of springs and wells (my focus). rips, it is a remarkable experience, it saves peoples' lives.
I have a side business making simple pine caskets and coffins. I custom make them with options and ship around the country. Look up my webpage as well as my Facebook page for American Handcrafted Caskets and Coffins.
I lost a kidney to cancer in early 2023 and unfortunately the kidney cancer spread to my lungs. The good news it that it isn't one of the two typical "lung cancers". I'm receiving Immunotherapy Infusions and doctors say that the treatments are effective and now the cancer is not growing, its uncurable but we may have arrested its growth. There are some side effects and complications but they are minor in comparison. Until something better comes along I'll be receiving treatments for the rest of my life. So.... I'm grateful and full of appreciation.
I'm working on my bucket list already! I'm getting my Sport Pilots license. A lifetime goal to fly and I'm almost there. I'm so thrilled!
Anyway, its great to see your name on this list... thanks for taking the time to read this, hope to see you all. I'm looking forward to our 50-yr class reunion.
