Michael's Story
Life after WHS: I attended and graduated from Carroll College with a degree in psychology and no realization that work is what came after college. I did what most psychology majors do - graduate school. After 6 years in graduate school at Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, I earned a MA and a PhD in applied experimental psychology learning how to design and conduct studies, elicit attitudinal and behavioral data, and apply those insights to real-world questions. After graduation, the best applied research setting that had openings was the U.S. Navy where I led studies of gender integration aboard combatant ships, equal opportunity, organizational...Expand for more
behavior, and quality of life. With five years of active duty, I transitioned to the Navy Reserves where I'm now in my 16th year. My full-time job now is with RTI International as a project director and program director leading studies of military personnel and families as well as leading work for the Department of Homeland Security.
Family: I met my wife Alicia at Southern Illinois University and we married in 1995. The Navy took us to San Diego, DC, and Memphis. After transitioning to the Reserves, we moved to Apex, North Carolina where we've been since 2002. We have three sons: Riley (born in 1997), Braeden (born in 1999), and Tate (born in 2006).
