Michael's Story
This year (2009 - the time I am writing this) on September 27th I wlll be married to the same woman for 29 years. I have only been married once. When my wife and I got married, she already had two children, and we now have 3 grandchildren with another one on the way.
In about March of 2007, I weighed about 205 pounds. I was doing no exercise at the time and had (and still have) a sedentary job. I thought to myself - if I don't start doing something I am going to keep getting fatter and fatter. So, I started walking. Gradually, I started adding ankle and wrist weights and a waist belt while walking, and mixing up the amount of weight used. Then on some days, instead of walking, I would dance while wearing the weights. By the spring of 2008, I was down to 130 pounds. Some times I walk with a total of 92 pounds - 10 pounds around my waist, 21 1/2 pounds on each leg and 19 1/2 on each arm. Eventually, I will probably use more weight. Some times I use little or no weight. At some point, I added some isometric exercise and lately I added doing pullups, particularly an isometric pullup with weight - while having up to 30 pounds (so far) attached to me, I do a pullup and hold it for 5 to 10 seconds while trying to keep pulling. In my profile picture, I weigh about 138 pounds.
Before I lost weight my blood pressure was high and my heart/pulse rate was high and I needed to take medication for the high blood pressure. I have not been taking any blood pressure medication for some time now, yet my blood pressure is not high and my heart rate is down.
I became a Christian in 1982 and have read the Bible all the way through in several versions. In the past, I had memorized the book of Revelation in the King James version.
Though I have not done so for a few years, I used to debate extensively on christian websites, using the name litlmike (with that spelling). When I first got on the internet, I was the only one using that name with that spelling. If you would have searched that name, I was the only one you would have found. Now several people use that spelling. The spelling came about when I tried to get into a chatroom using little mike, which had too many letters for me to log in with it. I have also used that name on other kinds of websites.
I received many messages from people complimenting me on my manners and thoughtfulness when debating. I even had some people that I debated compliment me. Of course, I had some insults as well. I just could not please everybody.
I like to read a lot. I read a lot more books, and of different types, than I could mention in this space, but I will mention a few. I like to read books by Elmer Kelton (westerns) and Louis Lamour (mostly western). Many of Elmer Kelton's fiction books are built around historical facts. read a lot of books dealing with dog training and/or behavior. Sometimes I read books by and/or about musicians. A good book that gives a glimpse into what goes on in the music world is Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Basta___ by Al Kooper (not Alice Cooper). Over the years I have read a lot of books on nutrition, diet, health and fitness, but don't much anymore unless something really grabs my attention.
When I first registered on classmates, I had 4 dogs - 2 Boxers and 2 Doberman Pinschers, that I used to walk together and under control. Many people thought I was a professional dog trainer. I also had a cat that I walked on a leash - she would come running when she saw me get the leash. All of those animals got old and are gone now. Some time after my 1st Boxer died, I got another Boxer, but he is also gone. I have no pets at this time.
I have learned to speak a little german (very little), a little italian, a little french, and more than a little spanish (though not quite fluent).
Although some people would argue that I shouldn't, I do listen to secular music (maybe they're right). like a variety of music, and dislike a lot. For the most part, I do not like disco. I hate rap, hip hop and most light rock. I like jazz, blues, classical, country and rock. Some of my favorite recording artists are the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Keith Urban, B.B. King, John Kay and Steppenwolf, Eric Burdon, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra. My two favorite vocalists in the rock music world are John Kay and Eric Burdon. I also like bluegrass and love the voice of Ralph Stanley. I also like Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry and many others.
I drink beer regularly, but not a lot at one time. My favorite beer is a dark german beer called spaten optimator, but I usually drink michelob ultra. A little less often, I drink wine. My favorite wine is Easley's Sweet Barrel Red (Easly winery is located in Indianapolis). Occasionally, I drink margaritas - usually when eating at a mexican restaraunt. I love Mexican food. Or, instead of a margarita, I might drink a negra modelo - una cerveza mexicana oscura (a dark mexican beer).
I have played guitar and bass guitar in some rock bands, but not since 1980. I was never that great of a musician though. Since then, I have went through periods where I would play for awhile (maybe a couple weeks or a couple months), but it wouldn't last. At times, I still have the interest. At one time, I was learning to play the piano, and I would like to eventually get back to it. I would also like to learn to play the drums. In the past, I have even toyed with harmonicas.
Being from Indy, naturally I am a fan of the Indianapolis Colts, but my favorite sport is baseball (really unusual for someone from Indy). Right now, my favorite team is the New York Yankees.
