Michael's Story
Life
While at Andrew Hill I was known by my stepfathers last name of Swift, though Spears was always my legal Name in my records. Some of you may recall my sister Kathy, she is doing well.
I left Hill in late 1974 to enlist in the Army, got off active duty the first time and returned to California to attend college, graduating from U.C. Davis with a BS in Biochem and later from CSU Sacramento with a Masters of Public Policy and Admin. Even after leaving active duty, I continued to serve in both Active and Reserve roles. After working for the state for 17 years doing environmental work, I was asked to returned to Active Duty in June 2001. I accepted and left my assignment at the California Air Resources Board.
I reported in to Austin, Texas in July of 2001 and on Sept 11 we all know what happened. As the Executive Officer of a Intelligence Unit, I was soon at work and I reported to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to stand up the Interrogation Facility there in January of 2002 as the deputy commander. 04, I reported to the Washington D.C. area, and while assigned there, I went to Iraq for a year, serving on the Iraq/Iran border as an embeded Advisor. In fact, I had my 50th Birthday in Iraq.
In my travels, I have run across one other Hill student, Glen Cart. I was sorry to hear about Jason Dahl, and my heart goes out to his family. I recall Jason from school as well as Civil Air Patrol.
Military
I was recently selected as the Deputy Commander for the, 501st Military Intelligence Brigade in Korea, I'll be there for two years starting in June 2009.
Married almost 30 years, 3 kids 2 boys and one angel of a daughter.
Lastly, to all current and former Hill students who have family or have served in the military, let me thank you for your service to our nation. Not many folks know it, but it really is one of the most exclusive clubs in the nation. Less than 1 percent of all Americans have ever served their nation in uniform and today only 3 of 10 qualify to enlist, of that only 2 without a waiver.
