Michael's Story
After high school, I attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. I participated on the swim team at the college and earned All-American recognition my junior and senior years. I never could have made that happen by myself. I had a great coach and fantastic teammates that kept me straight and pushed me every step of the way. Upon returning from National Championships I joined an intramural basketball league and blew my knee out in the first game. Two weeks after therapy was finished I did it again. After graduating with my bachelor's in '93, i stayed as the the assistant coach on the team.
In '95, I moved back to Milwaukee and was an assistant coach for my old age group team (Southwest Aquatic Team). In '96, I was the head coach for West Allis Swim Club. I moved to Buffalo, NY in '97, to be the head coach of a club program at the University of Buffalo. While there I started an outrea...Expand for more
ch program for underpriveleged and disadvantaged kids in the City of Buffalo. USA Swimming made me the National Chairperson for their Outreach Committee and I spent the next three years travelling the country meeting with government officials and swim clubs trying to develop outreach programs in their communities. While doing that on a volunteer basis, I left the program at UB to become the head coach at Buffalo State College where I am to this day.
While running the outreach program I met my wife, Kim. I had made a bet with some of the kids in my program that if they scored a certain number on one of their tests I would take them for the last hour of shool on a Friday to play basketball. I lost the bet. When I went to pick them up in their classroom, I met thier teacher, now my wife, Kim.
Kim and I were married in August, 2000. Nicholas was born in August, 2001 and Alexandra in May of 2003.
