Michael's Story

Life Started at Memphis State (U of M now) and worked part time at Sears. Went to work at MMHI (Memphis Mental Health Institute) for a while and MSU part time. I went back and forth like that for 5 years then started Nursing school at East Arkansas Comm. College in Forrest City, Ark. Got out of school and worked at BMH Central til October '86. Oops, got married in May of '80 (can't leave that out) to DeRhonda Taylor (Hammond Hills '78). In October of '86 we moved to Maryville, Tn. (about 20 minutes south of Knoxville) and I've been working as an RN. I've got two sons. One 24 and the other 20. My 20 y/o was on the 2000 State Champion 4A football team. They beat Mphs East. Didn't get that from me: I played in the band. You could get hurt down there on the field. He plans on getting married in July. My 24 y/o graduated from UT Dec. 10, 2004. I've been in the GI Lab at UT Medical Center, Knoxville for over 15+ years now and like the work pretty well. My folks still live in Frayser. We get back that way once or twice a year. East Tn. is home now. The boys have essentially grown up here and don't remember that much about Memphis. My sister, Kathy, class of '74, put me onto this site and I'm glad she did. Alot of familiar names. Hope to here from you. As of May 12, 2003 I have no more children at home. They are both grown, working full time, now and out of the house. I think I like this "empty nest" thing. I've been working at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville, Tn., part-time for the past 4 yrs. Just for fun I'm going to suggest something to all of you who have or are going to turn the big 50. Age 50 is the time for a screening (not screamin...Expand for more
g) colonoscopy. The worst part about it is the preparation. The best part is the drugs you get so you don't remember. I've been driving back and forth to Memphis alot the past few months to check on my folks since Kathy died. They are not in the best of health. So we might run into each other on one of my trips. (11/09) Well I'm still around. Quit the part-time work so I could reclaim my day off during the week. I've got a daughter-in-law (3 yrs now) and I get to enjoy being a grandpa in June if all goes well. Mom passed away May 2008 and dad still lives in Frayser. I'm over there several times a year to see him. Maybe I'll see some of you every now and then. 07/31/10. As of 5/26/10 I'm a grandpa to a beautiful boy. 8lb. 12oz and 20 and a half inches long. Born to my youngest son Jordan and his wife Stacey. All are healthy. 5/30/14. Dad passed away 11/9/11. We sold his house and got all the particulars taken care of. I don't get to Memphis much now. We got a new addition to the family last July. Jackson Cole Travis. He's 10 months old now and is quite the character. He's exactly like his dad (my youngest son) in personality and mannerisms. Makes 2 grandsons now. Still working at UT hospital in Knoxville. Looking for retirement in the next three years or so. As of 6/30/17 I started a new phase of my life. I retired from state service and now work part-time (3 days a week). Still at UT Hospital Knoxville. I'm not working directly with patients anymore. I'm collecting data for the GI department, payroll, and maintaining policies and procedures. I can finally schedule my work around my private life instead of the other way around.
