Michael's Story

Life Long Haired Hippie on a 1967 Triumph Bonneville (classic make, classic year, classic model - talk about dumb luck)that I bought in May 1968....Incredibly, I still have it today and rebuilt it after all these years (Oct 2019). I made it look like new, and incredibly I still have my purple suede Hippie jacket that I bought at the Applestone (at the "Village") in July 1969, and it looks brand new.....perfect condition. I look put on the jacket, and get on the "Bonny", and taking a drive around Longboat Boat Key, all the Motorcycle people die of jealousy....the bike is so classic...it thrills me to think of it!!!! It makes me think deeply about all of You, and all the memories of friends, great teachers, etc. Moved to US in 74, 2 yrs. Illinois, 14 rs. South Florida, 11 yrs. Southern California, 3 in Silicon Valley, and now back in Florida another 15 years (Longboat Key, at the beach). I'm retired and was in Engineering Management and enjoyed work. I went to University and got 5 degrees, ASc, BSME, MBA, MSME. BCS, after being in the 4 year Science and Technology Program at Etobicoke - class 12-S (yes, 2nd from the bottom). I just became better directed at life, and have done reasonably well. I live on a beautiful tropical island called Longboat Key, connected by bridges to the mainland of Florida (offshore of Sarasota). Canal in the backyard, a 2 minute walk to Gulf of Mexico white sand beach, always deserted. I would love to hear from anybody - it is always an extreme pleasure. Mike Uhran School I went to Norsemen, Queensway, Royal York, Etobicoke, and Ryerson,(in Canada) in that order - I always was consistent doing very poorly all the time. I went even further downhill from there and became a bum for a while and got terribly, terribly bored and started to crave knowledge; I felt I was wasting my life and accomplishing nothing - this really bothered me. Got married to an American and moved to US. I went to Parkland College, Ill. (1 degree, 1976), Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL (triple graduate, BSME 1978, MBA 1980, MSME 1986), then California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA. (BCS 2001). Biggest Crushes Cindy James at Richview(gasp!!!!!!!), Rhonda Wagg and Linda Sutherland at Norsemen. Janice Doyle, Helen ? at Queensway. Probably 30 others at least - sorry if that makes me seem shallow. Teachers There was many good teachers. Mr Varsava was my Auto Mechanics teacher at Etobicoke; he also was my uncle (my Mother's younger brother) and my Godfather; only a few people knew this. He passed away in 2005 from Parkinsons and it hurt me a great deal. He was very proud of me, and cherished me as a student, nephew and Godson, I loved him. One day we were standing around the chopped up car in the auto class and he was lecturing on the distributor cap on h...Expand for more
ow important is was to not drop or damage it, as it would crack and make the car misfire. He said he would pass it around, but again be careful!!!. He handed it to me AND I DROPPED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and cracked it!!!!! Everyone went quiet - dead silence as he had a reputation as being very, very strict. He picked it up, looked me in the eye and said "AND WITH YOUR FAMILY BACKGROUND!!!!" Well Paul Smith and Dennis Cherneski were the only ones who knew what that meant, and I thought that Paul would need to be resuscitated from laughing so hard. He went from pink to blue to purple in that order...I never seen anyone laugh so hard. My uncle asked him several times if he knew what "that" meant.....Paul couldn't talk, or get any breath. It made my uncle laugh and smile. Other Great Teachers. Mr Ropchan Math teacher at Etobicoke. Everyone made fun of him. When I was doing very poorly in math class, he talked to me, and then had the principal talk to me because I had high math skills (98% SAT), yet did very poorly. It was then I realized that this was a Truly concerned teacher who deeply cared. I have had only the greatest of respect for him ever since, and have been ashamed of my earlier attitude towards him. Mr. Haller grade 7 Queensway. a physically short man with a towering character, Mr. Kurcheff grade 8 was made fun of, but he was just a clean decent man. Mrs. Campbell, grade 3 Norsement, very kind. What is life like now? Again, retired, but worked as a Director of Engineering, Product Development in ultra high pressure sensors for aircraft (fighters, etc), semi conductor automation, etc etc.. I live on an offshore island (Longboat Key) so I spend a lot of time on the beach which is a typical white sand, multi colored water, Gulf of Mexico beach. The water here is 90+ degrees in the summer (it was 98 once), Belly boarding is a lot of fun when the waves are at least 3 feet (Gulf of Mexico is quite calm most of the time, so surfing and belly boarding only happens about 1 time a month), Kayaking from my backyard to sandbars and through the mangroves in Sarasota Bay, go out dining a lot, swim in the pool. There have been Dolphins and Manatee (sea cows) swimming in the canal in my backyard several times and that is really exciting. I feed a 4-1/2 foot tall bird that comes to my back door everyday, he eats out of my hand, and I have to watch out for his long beak as it moves very fast to grab the hotdogs. He is very relaxed in my presense; he trusts me. Life here is really as good as it sounds. Nuff said fer now! Update Sept 30 2019 - I'm single, alive, doing fine, looking good, my genes have been good, just love living in Longboat Key....and I have completed fixing my 1967 Triumph Bonneville that I used to drive to Etobicoke CI and Ryerson, it looks wonderful.
