Michael's Story
Life
After graduation, Kathy LaForest and I were married in 1969 and celebrated our 35th anniversary earlier this year. We have two children: Our daughter Anneke (pronounced like the golfer, Anika Sorenson) who is named after my 10th great grandmother, and our son Aaron. Anneke was born in 1979(26 yrs old) and is now Mrs. Robert Wheeler and working in Ogden, Utah. Aaron was born in 1980 (25 years old), served as a missionary in Japan for 2 years from 1999 to 2001, and is now married, working, and going to school at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
In 1972, Kathy and I became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and that decision has greatly influenced the direction of our life together. (You can learn more about the Church at the LDS Church web site and can even drill down to the Penn Yan Branch web site to see the "view" from our house.)
I graduated from Wayne State University in 1972, with a B.S. degree in Education (Art Education), and subsequently taught at Brighton Middle School in Brighton, MI for 2 years. I decided that teaching 5th through 8th graders wasn't what I really wanted to do, so I tried a number of things including driving for an air freight company, working for Hurst Performance in Brighton, and for another specialty automotive manufacturer. ...Expand for more
I was self-employed twice; once publishing a monthly newspaper for engineers, and later with a mechanical contracting business in Battle Creek. Eventually, (in 1986) I went to work as a Facility Director for healthcare organizations, which is what I do now at Finger Lakes Healthcare in Geneva, NY.
We live in a beautiful area, where we can see for over 15 miles from the deck off the back of the house, overlooking Keuka Lake and the hills of the Finger Lakes region. I travel about 25 miles to my office each day and the worst traffic problem I usually encounter is a Mennonite Buggy.
I serve as the Branch President (pastor) of our church in Penn Yan, NY, and I'm Chairman of the Planning Board for the Town of Jerusalem, and I serve on the School Board for the Penn Yan Central School District. (Mark Twain said that "God first created the idiot for practice, then he created the school board.")
Kathy works for the Geneva City Schools and is an avid genealogist. She has traced her family lines back to 1325 and has helped me get mine back to the 1500's. (I'll let her do her own profile and she'll probably brag . . . I mean comment more about the kids.)
I'm afraid that we have lost touch with most of our old friends and aquaintances, but we certainly would be glad to hear from anybody from school.
