Michael's Story
Life
After graduation I worked a few jobs including a stint as foreman of a custom glass shop. I moved to a job with Gerry Baby Products which I stayed at for the next seventeen years, becoming a building supervisor. During all of this time I remained single and spent every moment away from work playing guitar and bass professionally. Through the 80's Gigs everywhere put many weeknights, most weekends, all vacation, personal, and leave time to great use. The late 80's and early 90's included strings of gigs opening shows for Blue Oyster Cult, Foghat, Killer Dwarfs, and others - I have also done a bit of voice work including some radio commercials for Z-Rock. After leaving the music biz in 1993 I decided to start the next phase of my life by cutting my hair, getting a little more sleep every night, getting back to church, and locating a wife. I married Tam Than in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on November 1, 1995. It took two years to get immigration you-know-what completed and on August 17, 1997 Tam and her 5 year-old son Huy arrived in Denver. At that time I went to work for Cummins Rocky Mountain, L.L.C. and began managing several national maintenance contracts (emergency/standby power generation) for Telecommunications companies along with scheduling local crews. Whirlwind stuff. Outside-of-work "gigs" include five years with the Denver Police Athletic League as assistant defensive coach for Huy's football team, as an assistant coach with Jeffco baseball. Now that Huy will be moving on to High School I will leave the coaching to them. As of the time of this writing - February 24, 2006 all is rolling along well. I consider myself blessed as Tam and Huy are gifts beyond measure and I thank God every day for them. We enjoy occasional traveling along with quiet times at home, and of course, we all enjoy many different flavors of music. I do squeeze out time to work out, ski, and build more Halloween stuff. I like playing around with my investments too. I enjoy golf, but I think the time for that won't come around for a while yet - maybe in the next phase. Note: Music never leaves the blood as I've still got all my equipment stashed away - sometimes here and there music flows out of the basement shop and even once in a while the volume rattles the windows. Life is awesome aint it? MAV
2011 Update- Now our son Huy is up at CU he is studying physiology which translates to post grad which means we will have a college student for twenty somethnig years(?) I have been golfing more and although I am improving this is still the most difficult thing I have ever done. Still working out, and God forbid, playing some guitar. As just a passing thought perhaps I should put together a band of fifty-somethnigs and name it "Steel Prostate". Time not being an adundant commodity limits any serious go at either of the two G's - Golf and Guitar. I still like my job so time ...Expand for more
spent doing that is fine. If I wait until retirement to reform a band I can call it "Rest Home Miscreants" and since everyone will be as least somewhat hard of hearing we can perfom some hastily written stuff as no one will be able to hear too much of it anyway. Passing thought (aren't we all lucky?) - 75-year-old guys having the females flinging their Depends up on stage - WINNING??? Back to reality - Because of Tam I am the best fed man on planet earth seriously I kid you not. She is awesome! Halloween 2010 we had 300 trick or treaters come by the house. We have been expanding the display over the last few years and will most likely add some more this year as well. Tam has asked me, "how much is enough?" to which I have not yet replied. Gotta run. Enjoy the day! MAV
2020 Update - I voted for, "Giant Meteor" in the 2020 election. I dropped playing golf around 2016. I would rather spend time doing things at which I can improve. Our son is a full fledged accountant and computer geek and is out on his own with a home and long-term girlfriend. Tam and I are updating the house - she is getting a brand new kitchen (should be completed next week) the exact way she wants it and I get a couple new guitars. I have been playing daily since August of 2019 (today being November 5, 2020) and am planning on doing some recording. I am still with Cummins, Inc. and am currently doing Service Sales and Account Management. Tam and I enjoy travelling around when we can get away from work - 2020 has temporarily put a halt to that, of course. I am trying to talk Tam into checking out Burning Man if they run it in 2021 but that is a tall order attempting to convince her to live and dart around like an un-responsible, un-serious, aging sand lizard for a few days. I mentioned to her that if we find it too weird or sandy we can run to Vegas, get cleaned up, and take in a couple of shows. Who knows? Crazy? Yes! Do I care? No!
April 2023 update - All is well, Huy is getting married on September 30 to his long-term girlfriend and perhaps a grandchild will eventually be coming along. ****I have been back to playing guitar since August 2019 - it is my escape - I play daily. No outside plans with it yet. We spent three weeks in Vietnam this past November (missed a couple of big snowstorms while there) touring around the country via Viet-Jet and drivers for hire. We had a great time. Communism sucks however the people are excellent. Our new additional 27' x 22' detached garage was just completed (almost two years to get the permits). My father passed away in April 2019 at age 87. My mother is still with us and at age 90 still lives in her home in Northglenn. My 7 younger sisters are all doing well. Between my Tam and I our family group is HUGE (she has 8 living siblings). I have attempted to count (yet). We are looking forward to a great spring / summer season. My best to all -
