Michael's Story

Life I began my schooling in Texas attending preschool and kindergarden. I attended one year in the first grade at G.H. Whitcomb Elementry without speaking a word. Have you ever heard of AmeriCorps? Well, I served two years as an AmeriCorps*VISTA member in Oklahoma right after college. I loved it so much that I decided to continue my service by taking a job at the National Headquarters of AmeriCorps under the Corporation for National and Community Service. After four years with AmeriCorps, I am moving on to get a Masters in Knowledge Management and become the Chief Technology Architect of the West Texas Food Bank in Odessa Texas. You can read more about my family on the web. I taught my mom to develop webpages and she developed our online family tree. School From pre-school to first grade, I didn't utter a sound or speak a word in school. I still don't understand why, but think something happened during my very first day I attended school. I believe my first kindergarden teacher was called Ms. Mackey (???) I still have no idea why I would not utter a peep outside the counselor's office. October 2005, I went back to Clear Lake City to visit and saw the G.H. Elementry and my old neighbrhood. Is there anyone else out there that was in first grade with a VERY silent shy boy or remember the counselor or the class across the hall that gave me a great send off trying to get me to open up? My family moved back to Alva, OK where I was born. The first day of class, I broke my silence and said hello and introduced myself to Monte Campbell. My best friends in were Matt Reed, Chris Braily, Stacey Curtis, Kevin Dixon and Grady Watts. I still remember crashing my bike riding down Skyline and exploring the canyon behind Skyine with Grady. I still can't believe I had the same creative writing class with Chris at OSU. Every decade we end up meeting again for some reason. I suppressed much of my computer, programming geek character until afer I graduated college...then I embraced it as a database specialst. I had as much fun at Washington Elementry School in Alva as I did living in Washington, DC for five years! My XBOX LIVE ID is MWag5. College I started college...Expand for more
, Oklahoma State University, right out of high school. I met the most unlikey best friend at Oklahoma State who shared his family when I began losing mine. He is totally on the opposite side of the political spectrum. During my last two years in College, I became very active with the Office Campus Student Organization (OCSA) and the Student Government Association as a student representative and on the executive committee developing an newsletter for OCSA called the Concord. Workplace I have worked for four Feeding America food banks managing databases, operations, and volunteers for over six years and counting. I am currently the Donor Services & Database Manager at the East Texas Food Bank. I have been a bartender, line cook in a mexican restaurant, and a government employee. I guess you can say no job is beneath me especially after working for the government. Ha! Really, working for the Corporation for National Service in DC was the best 5 years of my life. I served as an AmeriCorps*VISTA member with Southwest Society on Aging, now apart of PartnerShips for Aging. I helped develop a Technology Learning Center for older adults at the local senior center in Stillwater, OK. I also developed the first interactive website for Southwest Society on Aging and became its first Website and Technology Coordinator. I serve PartnerShips for Aging in the same capacity. I assisted and guided the development of my family genealogy website. I recently worked as the Information Specialist for the national headquarters of AmeriCorps*VISTA under to Corporation for National and Community Service. I began as the assistant (secretary) to the Director where I helped design an alumni unit and database managing more than 300,000 members and alumni contact information. I recently received a promotion to become the Information Specialist managing information requests about the program and serve as a leader within the AmeriCorps*VISTA office through two different administrations and directors. However, less than a year I quit to further my education and expand my knowledge in information Technology. I am now the Chief Technology Architect for the West Texas Food Bank in Odessa, TX.
