Michael's Story
Life
My Dad always said that he felt the same as he did in high school but the guy in the mirror kept getting older! Shocker. It's interesting how there is an instantaneous bond when you meet old friends from your youth. We asked a lot fewer questions and had a lot fewer requirements of each other then or maybe we just had common backgrounds and interests. Whatever it is, it's always wonderful to see old friends.
The best thing I ever did was my 3 kids. It was a blast raising them and they have turned out to be wonderful adults. Julia is 22, Joe 20 and Mike 18 and though I work at U of Mich they all go to State (Julia graduated). When I interviewed with the Dean he actually said (seriously) that it was OK that my kids went to State. Woa! What if he overhears me during a Michigan vs State hockey game?
I try to think what I would like to read about my classmates to get an idea of what I should write here.
What the heck happened to that Mike Wider? CC then Basilian seminary for 3 years then college then grad school then marriage and babies and a bunch of careers then now. Great 40 years!
Occupation, scientist; Assistant Prof at WSU then VP of Tech for a chemical company, then on to a printing ink company, then Pfizer (no not for the Viag...Expand for more
ra) and now in the College of Engineering at U of Mich. Phew! What a ride. Its been very interesting since I love science and have gotten to learn diverse areas from my start in medicine to specialty chemicals to inks and on to engineering.
Passions; literature (Faulkner, Conrad, Austen) and poetry (Yeats, Frost, Cummings) , backpacking in the Canadian Rockies.
Pastimes; guitar (classical, R&B, folk), sculpting (busts in clay), furniture building, running, weight training, snow skiing.
Movies; What About Bob?, The Family Man, Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth), Room With a View, Armageddon.
I think of those Christmas letters from friends that remind me of sitting through 2 hrs of someone else's 8 mm family films when I sit down to write something about my own life. I sort of enjoy seeing their happy times but it makes me cringe that I would ever torment my friends that way! So the shorter the better.
Let's all hope and pray that our world calms down a bit and we can get back to trying to make it a decent place for our kids and grand kids. It's always been and always will be a dangerous place that nobody gets out alive from. I hope you have had 40 great years since we graduated from CC. The next 40 should be a trip.
Best regards, Mike
