Life:
How do you write a bio in 4K words? Don't tell much I guess.
I had the wonderful experience of going to a number of schools as we moved around when I was growing up. Dad joined the Corps of Engineers when I was 12. I made many friends that have fallen into the fog and hope to see a few familiar names out there and learn something of their lives.
I've worked in many different capacities, more than I can speak of here. I was in the Navy from 1969 thru 1972. I made the decision in college that I would not get strapped into a single profession and that has kept some of the zest in life. I did graduate from a Water and Wastewater Technology Program in Cedar Rapids. This has provided much diversity. I came to San Antonio, Texas in 1981 and began working for my father-in-law at his irrigation and utility company. In 1987 he passed away and I took the reins for the next 12 years when we were fortunate to sell out to a large national corporation. Once again, change keeps things interesting.
I have a wife that I have been with for 37 years. She's a beauty and the woman behind the man. Sorry guys, it's completely true. If it wasn't for women all of us men would probably lay around in the mud and drink beer. Not a bad alternative when you think about it. Anyway, I have 4 sons, 6 grandchildren, and we are raising the 5th grandchild. A beautiful little boy of 12 years named Michael; of all names to have chosen! We're not as fast as we used to be but we have experience on our side.
One of my proudest accomplishments is that 19 years ago we moved onto a pi...Expand for more
ece of land (Bulverde, TX) where we first lived in a trailer, built a garage with a loft, lived in that while building a house; a 2-1/2year project. It's an alternative structure constructed of rammed earth. A green building no less. You can see examples on the web; our house is featured on one of the sites. It's a great house for Texas climate but wouldn't work for Iowa, South Dakota or cold areas. I was the contractor, my wife the designer and we now live happily where no one can see us, at least from ground level. One of the greatest difficulties seems to be actually leaving the property to go do something. There is work and groceries and now child activities again so of course we do leave.
At 66 I am now more seriously seeking answers as to how I may contribute/influence sustaining our environment and resources. As Thomas Friedman aptly writes, we are "Hot, Flat and Crowded". We baby boomer generation are as he describes, the grasshopper generation; spending the assets of our children and grandchildren. To complicate matters we have made sufficient commotion that the remainder the inhabitants of the planet seek (and are just as worthy) to have the same life style. See where I'm going here? What are we/you going to do about it? Where and how do we proceed to correct the problems? Technology is certainly part of the answer as well as life style changes. Please do think about it, if we don't take action who will?
Best Regards to all of you. For those of you who I knew in the past, thank you for what you added to my life. I pray that your life has been all that you hoped for.
Mike
