Michael's Story
After 9 years at St. Luke, I spent 4 years at Luther North and then went on to Valparaiso U where I graduated in '71 with a major in Social Work and a minor in psychology. I worked in child welfare and mental health settings and finally went back to grad school at George Williams College where I got my Master's of Social Work. I have been in practice ever since.
Got married 3/70 and divorced 12/76. Remarried in 1/98. Despite all, I have no children that I know of or admit to.... In '01 moved to Tucson, AZ. 3 1/2 years ago moved to the area around Charlottesville, VA where we still live. Actually my wife is from this area.
I was working as an Outpatient Therapist for a rural community mental health operation for almost 5 years. The past 4 years I've been working in Juvenile Prisons. I've specialized working with the most difficult behaviorally and emotionally.
Over the years, ...Expand for more
I have been a field instructor for MSW interns from UICC, Loyola, and Virginia Commonwealth. Strange when I first thought I was going to college to become a teacher. In different ways that is what I've done, but not in a traditional classroom.
As I think back to St. Luke it is with various feelings. Mostly I'm thankful for what I was taught and learned from Gert Doetterline (operattas), Jean Ladwick, Susan Rayers, Dan Jansen (mega memories), Erwin Smuda, Mr. Bruening, Ed Krenzke, Bob Hasse, and Ken Markwork. All those men taught me to listen to my heart. In grad school and undergrad I was honored to be guided by the likes of Margaretta Tangerman, Marge Robertson, and Bill Neal. There have been many who have crossed my path over the years - all of whom have taught me about themselves and taught me about me. I am everlastingly thankful for those experiences - no matter how painful.
