Michele (Mickey)'s Story

Have just found this site; hope to catch up with my classmates! Have 2 late husbands & present hubby of almost 40 years. We raised my 2 sons & his 4 daughters in our small Victorian town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, a very small early 1900’s tourist town on the National Historic Register...No neon, No traffic lights!! Remember when Naperville only had 3?! Lol! Anyway, we have 17 grandkids & 7 great grands!! I’ve owned my own restaurant, been GM over 5 tourist shops for 15 years, represented all the downtown tourist businesses to City Council for 3 years, & then became a Councilwoman for these last 12 years. I have decided to retire at the end of this term in December. After graduating in ‘68, I moved to Washington, D.C. for the prime protest years & to go to George Washington University nights, while supporting myself working in the second largest savings & loans in D.C. Remember those? 😉 As the head teller, I made a whopping $6,000 a YEAR, as opposed to the newest hired male teller (with NO experience) making $9,000 a year to start!! Yep, the protest years, bra burning, etc., etc... While there, I got very heavily into politics; not as a politician but into the knowledge of & understanding of, politics as a whole. This was facilitated by my ties to the Kennedy family & my Embassy clearance thru the FBI. 50 years later, I still have ties all over the world! I ran our local election polls here in Eureka for 22 years, until the state voted red in 2016, which was the first time since about 1823!! My older son owned his own business & is an EMT/firefighter in a nearby town. My younger son continued the family heritage & served in the Marine Corp for 20 years, including Iraq & Afghanistan. He’s the 11th generation Marine. Before going to Iraq, my dad told him about serving in WWII, being part of Iwo Jima ...Expand for more
& entering Hiroshima after the bombing. We had Viet Nam...does it never end??! After retiring, he started his food truck business & catering service in San Diego. Last year (2019) he finally moved home after 28 years gone & not only does his food business but is also certified as a minister & marries people... before feeding them!! Lol! As a member of the American Legion, I’m very active & involved with all Veterans & their issues, to the point of causing a riot at one Senate convention after proving the incumbent had lied when he said he had voted for Veteran’s aid when he had in fact, voted against FOUR aid packages! (D.C. was an awesome training ground for protest movements!! ) 😉😁 In a wrap up of the last 50+ years, my town is on top of a mountain, almost the geographic center of the country (shy by a couple of miles) & I love it!! Surrounded by farming like Naperville was, it feels like home; with loving, caring people everywhere. Being a historic town, we have all the old houses, tons of artists & are well known for our “hippy” population...”where the misfits fit”... We have more college degrees per capita than any place in the country, & mostly multiple! (I have 3) That means we know how to research & believe me, when it comes to politics, whether local, state or national, we DO research!!! We open our arms to everyone & accept everyone, with diversity being our middle name so to speak (we do NOT allow the KKK here even tho we’re surrounded by them!). First southern town to allow & have same sex marriages. First town to go against state laws/choices/ decisions & have NO discrimination allowed in town. We have fought the State 3 times in court & won! We have challenged them 4 more times & they have looked away. Come visit us; it’s a GREAT place to live! Especially for our generation!! 😉👍🏼
